i could do with some help in finding a new puppy. i have always had boarder collies but i would like a change. this is for a few reasons, firstly i ride out daily and would really like to take my new dog with me. this is not possible at the moment as i live in the beacons, sennybridge area and i am surrounded by about 70 square miles of common, great for riding and walking however covered in sheep. i live on a stud breeding horses but it is also a small holding and contains a few sheep, cows, pigs, chickens ect so the new pup will have to cope with alot.
my family have up to 10 collies at any time as they also resce them so the pup wont get lonely. i work from home 3 days a week and the other days at a saddlery so any pup can come with me but not to protective that no one can get in. does any one have any ideas as i have a lot of love for which ever dog i end up with i just dont want to bowl it over with too much to cope with/ any ideas people?

hi guest we too have horses (irish cobs) and our dogs sometimes come with us when we ride out. the border collie is an excellent choice our collies love running with the horses when we have a canter! we also have labs, staffies, a rottweiler bitch, a couple of terriers and 3 spaniels. the collies and spaniels seem to do best when it comes to behaving around the yard, staying within sight, responding to commands and keeping up with the horses. the staffies and terriers are usually up to no good and have to have an eye kept on them, we dont take the terriers when we go riding as they spend too much time hunting in the bushes etc! rottie prefers to stay home and potter about the yard. whatever you choose, i reccommend a puppy so you can train it to be at ease with all the various animals and the hustle and bustle of the yard!
What about a Dalmation, they are fantastic at working alongside horses, in the USA they have long distance rides specially for horse riders with Dalmations, the Dalmation must not stray further than one horses length away no matter what the distraction, I am sure it is called hocking, if you do a search including US sites on Dalmations and road trials you will see lots about it.
