Topic Other Boards / Foo / computer virus?
- By scratchy [gb] Date 12.03.04 14:42 UTC
i keep getting a message flashing up on my pc saying we have the virus mydoom.  i have run several anti virus check software programmes and they all come back clean.  i still think the pc is sending out emails by itself though as i quite often get e mails saying  a message that i did not send to someone i do not know could not be delivered.  any computer whizzes out there can help?
- By Hearn [gb] Date 12.03.04 14:45 UTC

Try this external virus checker first to see if you actually have MYDOOM or something else:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Then at least you will know what you are up against.
- By scratchy [gb] Date 12.03.04 15:00 UTC
have just finished runing this and is saying no virus' found
- By Fablab [gb] Date 12.03.04 15:08 UTC
Hmm strange one ?

Spyware maybe?

Try running "adaware" you can download it for free here:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Delete everything it finds. :)
- By kath_barr [gb] Date 12.03.04 16:13 UTC
First time I ran Ad-aware my son complained that a lot of his downloaded kazzaa files had gone. Any idea why it would have deleted them?(apart from it having a different taste in music! :D )

Because most Kazzaa files are full of hiden adverts and virus's!!  I stopped my daughter using it after our computer was infected beyond repair!
- By kath_barr [gb] Date 12.03.04 16:31 UTC
Thanks. :) I knew Kazzaa was full of rubbish as we've had to reformat before now and that's why I put Ad-aware on. I just didn't realise it got rid of the whole files, thought it just got rid of the rubbishy bits. :D

got adaware too!
- By Kerioak Date 12.03.04 15:11 UTC
Hi Scratchy

Are you getting these messages as you download emails - if so it might be that your anti-virus programme is catching them and telling you?
- By John [gb] Date 12.03.04 15:31 UTC
I agree with Kerioak.

But just in case, viruses often copy themselves into the folder which "System Restore" uses to restore your computer to an earlier state. This is the usual route of reinfestation. When anyone gets rid of a virus they should make a point of turning System Restore off, rebooting the system then switching it back on again in order to flush the folder out.

Best wishes

The virus sometimes hides itself in the system restore files, so it doesn't show up when you run a straight forward virus check.......you need to switch off system restore, run the removal tool, reboot, then switch the restore back on.............hopefully that should get rid of it
- By kez [gb] Date 12.03.04 18:31 UTC
I would suggest to run the removal tool for mydoom, you can download this from the  symantec website
try this site =
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.novarg.a@mm.removal.tool.html
if you scroll further down the page to where it says : Obtaining and running the tool, there is a link which  you click on (http://security response.symantec.com) and it should start the download.
i thought i may have had it too but my virus product kept telling me i didnt have it so i ran this anyways to make sure, it will scan your computer to check see if you have it, if so it will remove it, before you do it though you have to disable your system restore.
not sure if you have already tried this but if not its worth a go !
hope this helps

thnaks for all your help i think this might be it!!  it says its in the system restore file.  will do this and see if it works, i take it is safe to turn of the system restore?

right, turned off the system restore and ran all the virus stuff i have, avg, adaware, the stinger pc door gaurd, e trust antivirus and they still could not find a virus!  think i will give up and just have to put up with this annoying message!

They didn't find it because you deleted it with all your system restore files.  Your computer should now be clear, make sure you switch system restore back on, because you now don't have any restore points.

so far so good, no more silly messages :), thanks everyone!

The viruses are geting silly these days. I ran my virus checker at 8pm last night and it came up clear. At 10pm a warning popped up that a virus had been found and deleted. I thought I'd run the checker again just to be sure and at 10-30pm it found 2 more! I've received "Netsky D" so many times in the last 2 to 3 weeks it's unbelieveable and I'm sure at least some are coming from people on here because they are coming to the email address I only use on dog boards!

Anyone not using an up to date virus checker in this day and age is living on borrowed time.

Best wishes, John

But how do you turn off System Restore? :o
- By JReynolds [gb] Date 13.03.04 11:16 UTC
With XP you go to control panel, system........then the tab system restore, put a tick in the box..........then it will delete all restore points, not exactly sure where it is on other operating systems, sorry
- By scratchy [gb] Date 12.03.04 19:20 UTC
no, its not when im downloading messages, it is a new computer and it has a log in screen and these messages flash up when neither of us is logged in and not doing anything.
- By Daisychain10370 [gb] Date 12.03.04 21:06 UTC
Hiya
I went through a stage getting mails saying they had failed to deliver stuff that I never even sent, I think thats just junk mail, I just delete them if they look dodgy. I searched for Mydoom virus & found nothing. Just a thought but if these messages are flashing up when you dont use the PC is there a chance youve been hacked into? Have you got a firewall up & running?

Unlikely. So many viruses these days when they get onto a machine search through the address book and email everyone in the address book using as the "Sent From" address the address of someone in that address book.

What this means is that someone who has your internet address in their address book has a virus.

This is called "Spoofing" an address. I've had so many recently which makes me think that someone on here who has my addy has a virus. My guess is that the person concerned also has the email address of Richmond School in their address book! Ring any bells anyone?

Regards, John
