just want to know what other breeders think of this type of mating,

both of them where out cross breeding but putting them together bye the sire side,so only one line the same their sire

only that only done outcross with wispa then line bred brie to her uncle,

it just some elis would like to know that came up to me at crufts that wants to use they bitch, look at the pedigree and notice that the sire was there twice.plus both dog would be maiden at breeding.but the owner still got to get eyes.hip done yet

I think everything in moderation. As you say both were outcrosses so bringing back in mating these two to fix certain traits (we can hope!) I wouldn't have a problem with. Would only be concerned if it was consistantly half brother to sister matings etc.

Terri

It is fine until you start doubling up on the same fault.

i considered doing a half brother/half sister mating then decided against it because there was one fault I did not want to double up on.

Unless you know all the progeny and siblings back SEVERAL generations you have to be careful

thanks becky,i just been speaking to malcolm  willis the genetics,he was very helpfull,

in other words like you say watch what you are doing, keep records on all the matings etc,but never throw the baby out with the bath water in short terms,

all dogs will have one fault,no perfect dog out there.

Agreed that all dogs have one fault but if it is a major fault I would not double up on it.

if all dogs have a fault it all got to be a major one, beacuse of the breed standard applys to what the dogs should have,

If all faults were major ones, we shouldn't be breeding any kind of stock at all.

In my book, major faults are
1.    Poor temperament
2.    Clinically diagnosed hereditary conditions (as opposed to tests which are often faulty)
3.    Any obvious  and severe deviation from the breed standard.

All other faults must be assessed , and put in context of the dog's good points, which must be seen to make an improvement in the breed.    In other words, if, in flatcoats, you have a dog which is an outstanding worker, you may make allowances for slight deviations from the standard so long as they are mated with a dog of sound construction in that department.

Hope this makes sense

What I am trying to say is that I have in the past considered half brother/half sister mating.  However neither dog was absolutely perfect in the front construction.  Therefore, rather than double up on two less than perfect fronts I did not go ahead.  If I do not consider that a mating would improve on what we have I would not go ahead.

However, I would agree that one has to look at the bigger picture and take the dog as a whole.

yes bec i argree with not to double two of the same things in the two dogs, when you were considereing half brother to half sister were the lines behind them out crossed or line breed.

That was partly the problem.

The dog that we were thinking about has the same sire as our bitch - thus half brother to half sister.  But in addition the dam of the dog and the dam of our bitch share the same Grandfather - so it was more than half brother half sister - it was about 5/8 the same!!!

However, I stand by what I said - If I had thought it would have worked I would have done it without hesitation.  BUT I was in doubt.  IF IN DOUBT LEAVE IT OUT!
