Microchipped and/or tattood will ensure that your dog is easily identifiable should it get lost or stolen.

I think it's about £25 for microchipping.

I have just had my puppy microchipped it cost £20 but that was from a country vet and they are a bit cheaper, i'm told, from town vets. Don't think there would be alot of difference.
I would definately recommend doing it to set your mind at ease. Although it made my boy yelp a little he was fine afterwards. I don't think anyone would get near him to steal him. He is a rhodesian ridgeback and i wouldn't fancy your chances, but if he wandered off i would at least stand a chance of getting him back.
Tip for you if you decide to go ahead:- take the puppies favourite treat with you to try and distract him/her from the chip going in.

THe PDSA do it for £9.50 look on their website to see if there is one near you.
Pamela
Thanks for the PDSA info there is a PDSA pet aid hospital a few doors away :) they do it for people that arent on benefit i assume? We've always had a lot of problems with them even when my dog collapsed and we couldnt get her to the vet easily, we offered to pay them and they still refused so im not really a big fan of theirs.

We got our cat done when she was under for her spaying, I think you can do the same with dogs. It didn't cost that much. Waiting until the neutering does mean keeping an eye on them for at least 6 months, the Mog didn't go outside for about a year.
There is also a new chip out now, which also has a temparture chip added so they don't need to stick anything up there little bums when checking this!!!!!, they just scan the chip and it tells them the dogs temp!

This is a relaunch of an older chip that didn't see at great uptake last time, I know because I was asked about it towards the end of last yr by a couple of doggie folk as they wanted me to chip their dogs with it rather than the standard chip.
I was advised by my suppliers that this chip has been around a while and needs a different type of scanner to read the temp which few vets actually brought at that time, was also advised that cost price was £10 ish per chip which my enquriers weren't too impressed with when adding my traveling expenses and of course the scanner capable of reading the temp as well as chip number to enable me to check it was working correctly once in place.

Amy was chipped when we got her I think this shows breeders are more aware of the benefits of chipping. No offence meant to breeders who dont chip
Jean

Pets at home were doing it for £10.00 but I do not know if this was just an offer. at there instore vets
I had mine done tonight for £19 at a town vets in the south-east near to London and we pay more for everything (rolls eyes!), so looks like £20 is the most you can expect to pay.

Get in touch with your local council. Some offer vouchers towards chipping.
My local council give you a voucher for £10 towards the cost. So i only had to pay £5.
Sorry, should have said as well, that, you don't have to be on benefits either, just a resident.

if you are charged any more than £10 you are being ripped off! unfortunately most vets charge around £20 - 30. we buy the chips in bulk and so we know the individual price, to charge anymore than £10 is a bit unfair on the customer.
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the info, I asked the breeders and they said they dont recommend getting it done for a while until the puppy is big enough to go out without the lead.

you can chip a puppy from 6 weeks thats what we were told when we went on the course. we do our pups at 6-7 weeks, its a very simple procedure the longest part is filling out the forms and putting the stickers on each one!
Why? Am I being dumb here? I thought puppies often had them when they were around 8 weeks (don't know why 8 weeks in particular, its stuck in my head, I must have read it somewhere!) There's no way I will be letting Millie off the lead for a long while yet, but I had her chipped yesterday all the same - there's always a risk her collar could come off, in which case she would be tagless and the microchip could make all the difference to me getting her back....but then I'm a paranoid pro-tective 'mum'.
So did the breeders say why they didn't recommend having it done until the puppy goes out without a lead?
(Just remembered where I read that about having it done young - the Kennel Club booklet)
