Hello to all, I just wanted to get a little information about the breeding process. I have 2 labradors (male and female) and my bitch went into heat on Monday, and there was a tie about 9pm. last night which was Thursday. Should the 2 be separated now?  Can she already be pregnant?  Where do we go from here is there a guideline in which we should follow as far as taking our bitch to the vet and things like that?

I'm assuming this was an accident, because if you were wanting them to breed, you would have already done your homework and know how to proceed. Yes, it's quite possible she's pregnant, so unless you want a litter, get her to the vet for the 'morning-after' injection. And separate them for the rest of her season! (At least 3 weeks).

I read this as if it was a planned mating.
If the bitch came into season on monday she was only on say 4 when mated?? Isn't this very early?
I hope someone comes along with some advice for you soon.

I only let mine breed three times ex. Mon Wed Fri  I also kept track when they bred and how long the tie was. Then kept them apart. I would take the first breeding as day one and count 63 days and do that with the last breeding, this way I knew give or take in between that time she would whelp. I would also take temperature the last 2 weeks of pregnancy according to the first breeding, I took this always at 7am, 12:30pm, 4:30pm and again at 8:30pm. I know may sound over board but I made sure it was always that time and when her temperature dropped I knew it would be within 12-24hrs.

I take it your bitch has had all the tests that are required for this breed before you bred her, and that she has had at least 3 heats, and is a good example of the breed and both dog and bitch compliment eachother. If not then I would get the jab and do your homework before you breed from them again.

Must say I have never heard of a bitch going into heat and standing that fast...Are you sure that is the day she came into heat? My bitch never stood till day 10 or day 13.

we breed labs and i must say, that sounds a bit early for the bitch to be standing. i would leave it a few days and try again. it always helps if you can read up about dog breeding prior to attempting it, or better still, have someone whos experienced on hand to offer advice or even better, be there to help you mate and whelp your bitch. If your bitch was mated successfully on this day as you say, she will probably not be at the correct stage of fertility and ovulation so you should wait another week or so (all bitches vary in their cycle) and judge when she is ready by her reactions to the dog when he is mounting her etc. If you get a successful mating it is allways a good idea to tell your vet and remind him/her again later on in the pregnancy so that they can be pre-warned you are expecting a litter and help will be on hand should you need it, especially if this is your first litter. good luck
