Topic Dog Boards / General / why am i scared?
- By pinklilies Date 11.03.04 22:35 UTC
This weekend my much longed for afghan pup arrives, a companion for 2 year old delilah. Ive planned it, thought it out, got all the stuff, So why then am I terrified? I keep thinking "what if  they dont get on?", "how will I cope?". Will it spoil the fantastic rapport I have with Delilah? I  should be looking forward to it with joy!, but for some reason I feel really stressed.  I hope everything goes ok. :(

I'm sure everything will be fine, they sound like perfectly normal concerns to me, I havent had a puppy yet only adult dogs but we are planning on getting one soon and i know i will be terrified that i will be doing all the wrong stuff and completely ruining its development or something.
Its good to be a little bit nervous about things or so i find, its usually when you are completely relaxed that there end up being a few problems.

That probably sounds really negative but im sure everything will be fine and your dogs will be best of friends :)

I think we all feel pretty much the same at that particular time Pinklilies. Then by the second day I'm usually feeling that I've made a huge mistake and by the end of the week the puppy has its feet under the table!

Try not to worry, it WILL be fine!

Best wishes, John

I feel pretty much the same as you Pinklilies! We hope to have a new addition to our family in the next few weeks which I cannot wait for, but at the same time I am scared. Saxon is wonderful and seems very contented - will a new pup spoil this? Do we have the necessary skills to deal with a dog and a pup? etc etc...

I'm sorry if I haven't been of much help but thought I'd let you know your anxieties (sp?) are shared. I'm sure it will be all fine though and I wish you all the best luck with your new little addition to the family :)

Hi pinklilies

I was in pretty much the same situation last year. I had at that point got one very spoilt Irsih girl who demanded my full attention. My OH suggested a new puppy for my 30th Birthday and after much consideration I decided to go ahead with it. So the day came to bring the new puppy home. My Irish took the huff for the first day and wouldn't look or speak to me, but low and behold as John says after the first week the puppy had her feet well and truely under the table. I was slightly apprehensive when the two of them wandered of into the kitchen on the 4th night that I waited with baited breath for 5 mins or so and after hearing no noise decided to see what they were up to, how delighted was I to see them curled up together on my Irish girls bed. Now my bleedin Irish girl looks everywhere for my other girl when we take her out on her own.
God I've gone on longer than usual I'll shut up now.

Don't be too concerned. They will get along fine, just be careful when introducing the new puppy and remember to keep making a huge fuss of Delilah, this should stop her getting too jealous. Then let them get to know each other slowly at their own pace.

Best of luck with the new puppy

Alli

And I always thought I was the only one to feel this way :)

I booked my last one prior to the mating, I went through all sorts of doubts over those 12 weeks, I almost cancelled at one point, but wouldn't swap her for the world now.

Good luck, it will be fine

Thankyou all for your kind words and encouragement! I am sure he will fit in fine......and I should really get things in perspective, as I have an excellent relationship with the breeder, with whom I will be jointly owning this pup. So although I plan to keep him for the rest of his life, if there are problems I know that I have her support. He was supposed to be off to a show home in Australia, but he broke his tail last week ....their loss, my gain ( well I suppose it might even heal straight :) )

I got the pup last week (Suprise form OH) and same as John i felt like it was a really bad idea by the second day, but sat here this morning and i thought "Wow they have both settled" they get on well, Dolly now looks out for the pup (I mean standing on it) and Pickles looks out for Dolly's big feet.
No problems here! Apart from house training but that's another board ;)

Well Delilah and the new boy are sleeping together in a bed.....earlier she fetched a biscuit and gave it to him, and half an hour after his arrival i caught her getting him a toy from the toybox....Maybe she likes him :D

I'm soooooo jealous. I LOVE Afghans, and have always wanted one, however circumstances don't permit, YET. Lol.
I'm sure everything will be fine. They'll probably turn out to be best of friends, leaving you left out.:)
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
