Topic Dog Boards / General / Spaying a female?

That is what its called isnt it? or whatever the female of neutering is.

Ive been reading on here about the adverse affects of neutering on males, are there any with females? We wont be planning on breeding or showing our new puppy, it will be a family pet and obviously we dont want any unwanted litters.

My other dog was spayed because she was from the RSPCA and they neuter all dogs and it didnt seem to have any adverse effects on her?

You may get different views on this, but I had Libby spayed half-way between her first and second season.

I did not intend to breed from her, and her coat is def more fluffy, than is should be, but not a prob as we don't show her.

Best wishes with whatever you decide.

IMO there is only one problem with spaying bitches, and that is that they can become incontinent, though I've had 4 bitches done and have never had this prob.  You can also show your spayed bitch, providing you inform the Kennel Club first.

Roughly do you know how much spaying a bitch cost? when do they have it done, do they have to be a certain age? and how long are they in the vets for?

It depends on the size of the breed, Dolly was around the £80 mark. But i believe you can get it cheaper from participating vets if you are on benefits. (Ours does it)
(edit) Depending on the vets it can be after 6months or after their 1st season, it's generally a day case, in the morning out late tea time.

I'd ask the vet re the cost, if you get a dog from a rescue org they may subsidise the cost.  There is much controversy over the age to get them done, some people like to wait until after the first season but a rescue org may require it to be done by 6 months as part of the adoption agreement.

I think they are normally in first thing in the day then the vet rings you to tell you they have come round and you can go fetch them.
