i had a issue arrise the other day,& i dont think i handled it very well...well just let me know your opinions!!!
i train my 3 collies most days either in the park thats behind my house or on the concrete(if its wet) that lies between my house & the park.theres a woman who lives up the road who has a lovely dog called max who has a real problem with me.
she dosent like max to talk to any other dogs as then she cant recall him at all,so if im training she TUTs really loudly & has recently started saying "to Max" but so i can hear,"oh come on max, cant go that way".
THIS really irrates me as ive NEVER said to her not to come near me,& actually wouldnt mind training with the distraction if she did.
anyway this has been building up over the last couple of months, but ive just been ignoring her, but on tuesday i lost it with her.i was doing a sendaway with flynn so shouted DOWN & she shouted back "bloody women" & then said "sorry max we cant go over that side today".
i ended up telling her to "p*** off" & that "it wasnt my fault if she couldnt control her dog"
was this out of order?
i think she hates the fact my dogs are well behaved & she cant get her dog back, she calls his name & he totally ignores her, infact she has to hide behind a hedge to catch him!!!
what should i do next time i see her? i plan to ignore her!!!
shes upset quite a few people around here about different things already ,so im not the first!!!!

i would of done the same thing, if she doesnt know how to and cant control her dog its her own fault not yours, i'd carry on doing what your doing, if she does say something then just ignore her, shes probably just jealous that you have very well behaved dogs :D

Maybe you should offer to train her dog too ha ha

Hi Michelle,
I don't think I would have been able to control myself either. It sounds like she is jealous of your dogs. I can't stand people like that. Anyway training with distractions is good so I would tell her to bring it on!!! Just ignore the silly moo next time she obviously isn't worth reasoning with.

I would have done the same if not worse  the woman probably thinks that she should be able to go that way if she wants but she can't because you are there.
In fact next time you see her i'd be tempted to let your dogs run near 'max' so he runs off away from her lol :) and then be condescending "oh does your dog not do recall"? "I can give you some tips" :D

i normally call my three back when they go & talk to max (if we are just strolling around) but i might not bother next time & let max have a play for a change!hes a lovely happy dog ,i feel sorry for him because he only goes down the park, never on the beach or in the woods(which are both right on my doorstep) & even when hes down the park hes not allowed to play!!!!bless!

that may well be how you have affended her by calling your dogs away from max like you don't want him near them i have to say it can be frustrating when you take your dogs for a romp in the park and there are people who are training their dogs how is your dog suppose to know to keep away its a friendly dogs natural instinct to meet and greet then people look down their nose at you perhaps she would walk max more if she could walk more freely without the restrictions its probably putting her off taking him over, never assume its because a person has'nt bothered to train their dog some breeds are harder to train than others, my dogs would be drawn over to someone who had 3 dogs and was shouting commands and i would probably think bl***y woman and wish you would do your training in your garden so the rest of us could freely run our dogs
this is an honest opinion from the other side of the fence so before you all jump down my throat accept it modestly, all dog owners can't all agree on the same thing!!

Hi sid! i called my dogs away because she dosent like Max socialising with any other dogs!!!she has told me to keep them away!!!
i do not have a problem with max coming over when i am training to say hello!
Max, is a lovely XB who in my opinion would be very trainable but Mary thinks he should behave out of love for her!& dosent realise that calling his name 100 times when hes ignoring her DOES not improve a recall.
also i dont shout commands!!!my dog works A & b so theres not much talking!!!!
it is a PUBLIC park & i have as much right to train there as anyone else has to walk thier dog /play football etc etc.
By sid
Date 12.03.04 16:17 UTC
i agree with you entirely you have every right to be there, but its different courses for different horses and if someone was over the park training everytime i took my dogs out which meant i would have to restrict their walk because their inquisitive not badly trained it would p*** me off , and to be fair you said you were shouting the down command and you can't pretend you would'nt get a little p***** off if max who also has every right to be there interupted your training session every day!!
i don't understand you have to call your dogs away i thought it was max who needed to be called away?? to understand dogs you have to understand people and not every owner knows how to teach recall its the one most dog owners have trouble with!
By mygirl
Date 12.03.04 16:24 UTC
Personally if my children were playing football on the local park and some kids came over and walked straight through and spoiled the game i would be p**d off but on the other hand if they asked to join in then fair enough.
Same difference i would say? Would you not?
By sid
Date 12.03.04 16:32 UTC
no simalarities at all dogs are completely different from children and do not have the same knowledge of what is right or wrong they act on impulse never compare dogs to children and expect them to act the same way or your going to have problems!

At the end of the day I think the majority would side with you Michelle and would have done exactly the same in the circumstances. I don't think that the lady has bothered to train a recall hence the shouting of his name a 100 times! and you have every right to be there.
I'm with you Michelle!
By sid
Date 12.03.04 16:38 UTC
this is not about sides its about seeing the situation from both sides of the fence if the poster only wanted replies from people who agreed with her she should have said!
By labmad
Date 12.03.04 16:42 UTC

Quite right you are entitled to your own view sid but on this occasion, I think the majority of us agree with Michelle. It just so happens that a lot of people have agreed with poster. You appear to be the only one with a different opinion thats all.

i have to call mine away because SHE CANT call max away!
shouting one command is not the same as shouting lots of commands!
she has to restrict her walk because she has no control over him
also i dont see her everyday as i take mydogs elsewhere & also train at different times!!!so she has plenty of opporttunity NOT to be bothered by me!!!once or twice a week is hardly a HUGE problem that she needs to over react to?
IMO if the dog dosent have a recall it should be kept on a line in a open place for its own saftey
i know shes happy to get the behaviourists in but not do any work herself!!
& NO i would not be pissed off if max came over, in obedience we like to train for every eventuality.we get loose dogs in the rings at shows occassionally, & there are always dogs watching at shows & playing outside the ring, so i can honestly say i wouldnt mind!!

thanks for your opinion sid
By sid
Date 12.03.04 16:45 UTC
if you really would'nt mind then i beg your pardon! but you have to understand there will be owners who rightly or wrongly find it a nuisense this lady is one of them and getting annoyed with her will make the whole situation worse next time she'll be even more annoyed then your be annoyed so round and round in circles you go, so in answer to your question would i have lost my temper the answer is no !
she may have no idea how to train him but he obviously has a good life or he would'nt be so happy!!

Wonder if you could help me I have a two year old border collie x (not sure what with bless him) He is a blue myrl I think he has a strong bond with my husband and when my husband goes away he wees up the front door as he seems to be distreesed that he`s left him not sure what I can do to help him feel less distressed he`s very protective of me and my two girls he`s like another child in the house and he really craves attention he can get jealous at times to if my husband touches me he gets in between us and sits on my lap as if to say she`s mine although this can be funny sometimes it`s not always

blue collie x,
if you start a new thread im sure lots of people on here will have some ideas!

Hi, I had same problem yesterday ( see people who are anti-staffie) and told her too to **** off not in my nature I think she is a jelous woman who cant train her dog your sound lovely dogs, give them a pat from me and tell them to ignore the funny woman!! seriosly you did nothing wrong tell her to get a life!
By charliefarley
Date 11.03.04 11:28 UTC
Definatly her problem! If she had any sense she'd ask you for some advice on recall!
I commend you for waiting as long as you did before giving it to her :D I have absolutely no time for people like that,if they say anything rude to me or my dogs then i serve it straight back at them, dont give it if you cant take it ;)
I agree with letting your dogs go to her dog next time you see her,i would love to be there for that :p

I have a similar problem. There is a piece of set aside were I train my dogs and it has just about every dog walker in the area using it, most will stop with their dogs and watch us then say something along the lines of "Aren't they good". One old bat however comes over with her dogs and she uses a walking stick, so I am always careful not to let the dogs run madly around her. My problem with her is that she gets through the gate and immediately throws a tennis ball for her dogs to chase. Sometimes even the best behaved dog is tempted to run for the ball. She gets really difficult and complains if any dog other than hers gets the ball. She expects everyone else to keep their dogs under control so hers can chase the ball unrestricted.
Yeah, I think you should be awarded a gold star for not saying something sooner. Darn people drive me totally crazy with their attitudes. She's definately got the green eyed monster syndrome :) If it were me, I'd ignore her from now on coz you made your point (difficult as it may be) why lower yourself to her pathetic level.

shes a real old dragon!i think shes abit of a bully too but she wont bully me!
the park is quite big & she never goes around any extra if i "stop "her from going all the way around!!!!
thanks for all your support! anyone fancy coming to west somerset for a jumbo training session????shed explode!!

Taunton.
Looking for houses round Porlock way.
My boys love a good run on Dunster Beach (including the small human one!!) :)

cool! porlocks lovely!
we go to dunster beach quite alot, walk to there from minehead beach then back again. what dogs do i have to look out for when i next go ? i have 3 black & white collies! tara will come & drop a stone at your feet so we are prettey easy to spot as youll trip over her! lol!
By Julia
Date 16.03.04 09:48 UTC
3 hooligan Labradors. 2 black & 1 yellow. 2 will be miles ahead playing in the water & 1 will be toddling along beside.
Porlock is also very expensive!!! Can't yet find somewhere in the right price range.
Hope to see you on the beach.
PS are they all girls?

2girlies & my boy flynn! hes huge!!!
porlock is expensive ,not as bad as wooton courtney though!!!!
By Julia
Date 16.03.04 15:41 UTC
In that case 2 of mine can come to play but not the 3rd one!!
Hardly suprising that Wooton Courtnay is expensive, after all it consists of about 6 houses which take up several miles of countryside LOL!! :D Even so, Exford is by far the worst. 175k for a small 2 bed with no garden.
Saw a place in Timberscombe the other week that was described as needing some modernisation - it did too, a whole new roof and completely rewiring cause it was still on the old 2 pin sockets :O
Nice part of the world though.
And as you are local.......which are the best parts of Minehead to live in?

depends what you are after! there are some lovely propeties on North hill but are going to be expensive. i live in alcombe, theres apart of alcombe called "old alcombe" that is near the woods & has abit more character.
alot of the houses on the seafront & near to tescos have problems with damp (apparently!)
Hi Polly
Yours is easy - take a handful of tennis balls - marked with your or dogs names - and fling them in all directions and complain if her dog goes after them :D
By JoBasset
Date 11.03.04 12:20 UTC
LOL michelled ! She deserved everything she got...and more IMO. Definately think you should 'politely' offer to train her dog if she starts up again.. :P ....her hilarious reaction just demonstrates her frustration at the low level of training she has managed herself.
Go girl :D
Jo
p.s. A gang of construction workers were asked if the wanted to join in my training session with Rosie last night...that soon shut 'em up too ;)

im feeling confident now if i see her again, to ignore her but let my dogs play with max.shes used to being ignoerd because max ignores her each time she calls his name!!lol!
shes probaley slagged me off to all the other park people but never mind!
ive also had my training box p*****d on (not by max!!) & all the training cheese nicked out of a seeled container!!
i get lovely comments generally though. theres alot of elderly around here & they all sit & watch me out of their windows!!!
By labmad
Date 11.03.04 12:36 UTC

I'm sure the other people in the park wouldn't listen to the old battleaxe anyway - they would probably ignore her too! ha ha

hopefully not! i feel happier now that i know youd have all done similar!!!
By Sally
Date 11.03.04 12:43 UTC
When people like that talk about you out loud so that you can hear it's because they want you to react. The best way to really annoy her is to pretend she is invisible. Acknowledge 'Max' but pretend you can't see her. We have a guy over the road who is exactly the same when our visitors park their cars outside our house. For years we were giving him the satisfaction of knowing that he was getting to us by calling him all the names under the sun. Since he has been invisible to us we have had a lot less trouble from him. :)
Sally

its really annoying though!
How anyone can TUTT so loudly is beyond me!!
i must say because id ignored her out bursts for so long i think she was very shocked when i told her to p*** off!!
By fluffypups
Date 11.03.04 16:00 UTC
perhaps best course of action would be to politely ask the lady in question if she wanted to join you in training the dogs and perhaps her dog may have learned something? (and the lady too) rather than bottling it up and then shouting and swearing like that. if someone had an outburst like that at me, i would be very offended, but i wouldnt be in that situation as we are fortunate enough to live in a fairly remote rural area and have our own land to exercise the dogs on so we never have to meet other poeple or their dogs.
By fluffypups
Date 11.03.04 16:02 UTC
if she was offered the chance and didnt want to learn about training her dog then it would be her loss and you would probably be justified in telling her to get lost, though if it were me i would have been a bit politer, or maybe just carried on ignoring her?
By tohme
Date 11.03.04 18:24 UTC
I agree with Sally, be responding to her you are acknowledging that her behaviour matters to you. I use the same principle with people as I do with dogs, ignore what I am not interested in :D
I would have done the same thing! I have a friend who used to whinge constantly about my dog just because we bothered to train it to walk off the lead in the park
By Lily Munster
Date 11.03.04 13:48 UTC
I had a problem last week with a man who owns a very ill tempered Rough Collie. I was out on my before bedtime walk, Curtis on a lead (Because Asti & Miranda are finishing their seasons), Mia near to me and those old pair trundling along behind. His dog came charging down & went for Curtis...he said in a loud voice "Those dogs should be on a lead"! So I argued with him why should they be on a lead when it's his dog that came flying down to mine..."Because you know what she's like" was the reply! Can you believe it? My dogs mingle with hundreds each year at shows without problems but yet 1 nervous aggressive dog and mine have to be on lead! I didn't swear but ended up calling him a stupid old man......he said "So are you"! Huh?????

Michelle
when I first read the post title I thought this was going to be with regard to losing your temper with your dog
yes after a while I think I would have had to say something .
If she doesnt feel comfortable why cant she just walk further on away from you and your dogs.
I hate people who think they have a god given right to soemthing and that you shouldnt be there

I would ignore her next time too
but hopefully shes got the message and will try to avoid you from now on :)

I have a similar problem, both my dogs are allowed off their leads on the park and are great with recall, they meet many dogs and they get along with all off them. But there is this gentleman who has a Border Collie which he walks without a lead, but shouts to myself and other dog owners "Can you put your dog/s on lead/s because my dog doesnt like other dogs". At first I complied as did the other owners. Then one day I had had enough and I said "Your dog is the one with the problem, you put your dog on a lead, and I will make sure my dogs dont approach your dog". He started swearing at me and said his dog didnt own a lead!
