Does anyone know how long to leave newly plastered walls/celing before painting. My new kitchen is becoming a logistics nightmare, getting workmen to turn up is a major triumph.

It always used to be a minimum of 6 weeks, but that never seems to happen now.

I painted my celings 3 days after they were plastered ;)

Hiya
Just been and picked my Dad's brain (he's a painter and decorator by trade - very useful :) ). You can paint as soon as the plaster has dried (obviously dependant on climate conditions etc), although he did advise that its best to water down the paint which allows the plaster to continue to breathe. If you are wanting to wallpaper, unfortunatley it can take up to 6 months or more for the hair-line settlement cracks to form (this is particular to new build properties, extensions etc).
However, if its just a case that you've had existing walls just replastered, then it would be OK to wallpaper after 8 weeks.

We painted ours as soon as it had dried but used a special fresh plaster undercoat stuff for the life of me can't remember the name !!
We are still waiting 12 months after for a ceiling to be artexed as one of our builders stuck his foot through the ceiling

Sorry, should of explained....LSJ is right, there is special paint you can buy for your first undercoat to 'prime' fresh plaster.....however,Dad said its a rip-off and diluted paint to 'milk' consistancy will do just the job.
Hope this helps by saving people a few 'bob' :D

Jo is right ( or Jo's dad anyway ) its just watered down paint, it needs to be watered down because new plaster sucks all the water out of normal paint so it dries instantly and then peels off the wall.
We painted ours as soon as it had dried to roughly all the same colour, don't know about wallpaper because I can't stand the stuff.

Thank you, your all stars .Special thanks to jo's dad whos saved me a fortune with the primeing tip .I'll get some cheap white emulsion to water down and slap all over and save on the good kitchen emulsion.I'll have to get some gentle heat going to help dry its very cold at the moment .Thank god im not wallpapering that sounds like a nightmare wait.

We added pva glue to the first coat of paint about 1/4 glue to 3/4s paint. The plasterer told us to do this as it seals the walls. The second coat will still be absorbed but adding a little pva reduced this alot. Doing this means you can wallpaper a lot quicker and you save in paint as well.
