Hi this is the first dog i have had and need some advice.Holly will be 11wks on sunday and is a very lovely english springer spaniel pup with one small problem. When we got her at 7wks she obviously had little bladder control(i know this is normal!)and would even go in her crate whilst she was asleep. She now goes outside and can hold on for 3 hrs in crate but for the last couple of days i have noticed that she has started leaking again after following the trail back to her bed and also when she was asleep on me last night(she seemed to have no idea she was going yuk!)and also a slight fishy smell(!)took her to the vets this morning and she has given her antibiotics as she has a minor infection but she also said it could be vaginitus? or if it does not clear up she might have a problem with the tubes from her kidneys. Can anyone offer any advice as im new to vets and puppies and am now worried that she has a serious problem.Thankyou

You did the right thing, let the vet treat her it may well clear with the AB's if not take each thing as it comes and enjoy the pup, it will be fine but may get need a bit of help from the vet but I am sure all will be well.
I don't really know a lot about puppy problems but our last dog started to have "leaking" problems as she was getting older, the vet gave us some drops to put in her food that stopped the problem. Hopefully in your case they will be able to do something that doesnt require lifelong medication, but if they can do something for a 15 yr old dog then im sure they can do something for a puppy :)

Think in the case of the older bitch it may have been the result of spaying or just old age, think this pup will be OK when the vet has finished treating her. If it is an infection the AB's will clear it up if it is a plumbing problem an operation may be needed but it is too early to consider that but if it should be needed it is normally very successful.

The condition your vet is talking about means she may have an ectopic ureter. If this is so, she will need to be operated on. I have seen pups with this & the op is almost always successful, leaving them completely dry or in not such successful cases, it can leave them with very slight leaking, which can usually be controlled by oral madication. :)
Good luck with your pup.

Hope all goes well for you, try not to worry it is never as bad as it seems. Lost count of the number of times I have burst into tears at the vets only to find the dog if fine and back to normaly much quicker than I am. :)

Took Holly to the vets on saturday and she said to carry on with antibiotics (synulox 1/4 tablet twice a day) untill they are finished on thursday and then make an appointment to go back if she is no better. She is still going to toilet in her crate when she is asleep(not even getting out to use paper)so dont think antiobiotics are working yet and now her belly looks really red and sore can anyone recommend anything i can do to help this as she whines when i pick her up and is not getting very much sleep and is being a bit naughty because she is overtired(bit like my daughter!).Read a post somewhere about vitamin c helping with ph of urine any thoughts

Treat the urine burns as you would on a baby, wash and use a nappy cream, poor little girl can't help it if the urethra empties on the floor of the virgina the pup has no control at all and will need an op.

Thanks jackie H
do you think this has been caused by an infection as she was asking to go out and still does and was dry for 3hrs in her crate untill wednesday.Oh i didnt mean naughty by going to toilet on the floor that doesn't worry me i meant jumping up and biting again.

To be fair I don't know and your vet will have to decide what course of action he takes, if she managed to hold for 3 hours may be it is just an infection. Has you vet asked for a sample, if not I would try and get one anyway and ask for an infection test to be done. Try not to worry what ever it is you will get there in the end.
