Do Akitas in general have a good temperament? Are they good with children, are they easy to train?

Temperament more often is not good or bad but typical or untypical of the breed, except unless you mean an animal that is mentally unstable or vicious.

Akita's are very strong minded, and especially dog dominant.  they need good leadership.

Children need to always be supervised around any animal, especialy oen as large and powerful as an Akita will quickly become, but there is no reason why brought uup correctly an Akita like any other dog will not be good freinds with your children.

My advice would be to visit breeders and owners of Akita's that have children and see if you could handle the responsibility for this breed.

I agree with Brainless - talk to a number of breeders and, if possible, go & see a number of them. They are generally very good with "their" children - what can be tricky is other people's children when the Akita may feel they are threatening "their" children. A child should never take an Akita out unsupervised. Akitas are wonderful, but definately not for the novice owner.
