I am going to a 70s fancy dress party next week and was wanting to know what sort of top to wear? I wasn't born until 1978 so i haven't a clue!!!! .  I have tried all the local fancy dress shops but they don't seem to cater for larger ladies (size 18) oh and another thing how can i do my hair it is above shoulder layered bob.  Help me please lol

1970s fashion

Spent most of my time in maxi or midi skirts  with boots and cheesecloth shirts I seem to remember :) Oh yes and a suede fringed belt ....or in jeans (Brutus Gold or Levis) with plimsolls (no trainers back then) and cheesecloth shirt ....or again ...tank top and trousers :D :D

Tank top has got to be the classic 70s top - over a garish polyester blouse ( in bright yellow or orange) and with maxi skirt or enormous flares and platforms .
I am sure you will find plenty of stuff at jumble sales or second hand shops .
You could wear your hair flicked out at the sides - a la Farrah fawcett - or with just a scarf acting as a headband
Lucky you - 70s theme nights are brill :D :D

Wish I could help, but I'm much too young to remember the '70's  ;)

You can easily go off people, liberty! ;)

Baseball boots were fashionable with jeans as well (or they were in 76/77!). Which particular bit of the 70s are you aiming for? The fashions varied from hippy-type afghan coats, flower power etc all the way through to early punk (via glam rock).

Seems to me seventy's gear is all back in fashion what with flares and hippy dude floaty tops etc. Just go as you are and put an afro wig on. :P

And then there were some of those strange combinations, like hot-pants worn under a button through maxi skirts (unbuttoned to almost the top of course)  And dont forget shirts/blouses should have very long, pointy collars.  I seemed to live in 'green flash' tennis shoes, and duffle coats for casual, which with hindsight, both looked terrible with the shoes and coat!  Long floppy scarfs tied round the forehead with tails hanging down can seventies-ise almost any hairdo.  And dont forget the 70s makeup - Biba ruled! ;) think dark plum lipstick, pale face, pink circles of blusher, and very dark eyeshdow, pale browbone highlighter and loads of eyeliner and mascara!  Most things were glossy or shiny - even the eyeshadow ;)  Dark nail varnishes or silly colours (I remember having a bright blue and canary yellow, and yes, occasionally wore them on alternate fingers!)  Anyone remember the perfumes Havoc and Kiku?  It may have been tasteless but I DID enjoy the 70s :)
bye

I think I still have a spray of Havoc somewhere ... :o
- By gwen [gb] Date 10.03.04 22:34 UTC
Oh the memories of Havoc!  I remember I wore it when........oops perhaps best not go into it here!  And the Kiku giant yellow round gift box - I coveted it so, but actually got it for a birthday (or it may have been Christmas?), the Biba make up box, all those shiney discs of dark, dark eyeshadows, lip glosses ..... and then my little sister got into it and dipped lipgloss greasy fingers into the sparkly eyeshadow discs - it was never the same again!
bye
Gwen
(Still smmiling at the Havoc memory ;) )

Yes I remember Kiku and have used that as part of our Affix.

Were poncho's in then? Hot pants definately, mini, midi & maxi skirts - bright colours - tank tops - flares - platform shoes -long cardigans with belts - Charlie perfume - I also remember that when going to a 'disco' wearing a long dress!! Ah memories............all those years ago anly seems like yesterday!

The fashions in the seventies i remember was quite diverse.

At one point I wore:

two tone trousers
rupert trousers
ben sherman shirts
tank tops
monkey boots
red socks
brogues always shiny
crombie coat with red rose denoting I was from Lancashire sewn on the pocket(war of the roses thing)
hot pants yellow with boots
cheque skirts with tank tops
then later in the seventies went to platforms ankle breakers the higher the better
floaty blouses under a smock with trousers which were wide at the bottom

Enjoy your party

Tessa

Now I just love my jeans

Go for a HUGE afro wig, you can get them in most fancy dress shops :D :D
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 11.03.04 20:12 UTC
Either a wig or just get the curling tongs out and do those sausage roll things around the sides of your hair to flick it out!

Anybody remember those puffed sleeved blouses which were usually worn under a tank top? yuk! My favourites were the denims, we had everything denim, waistcoats, skirts, and long coats, and platforms so high they could give you a nose bleed with the sheer altitude. :P

<<<platforms so high they could give you a nose bleed with the sheer altitude>>>

and 2 broken legs if you fell off them :)
