Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / How to get rid of dandruff on dog

Hello

Does anyone know how to get rid of dandruff on short hair dog.  I washed him with a gentle dog shampoo (I wash him about every 2 months) but it came back worse.  We don't have central heating, just a coal fire which granted, he does plonk himself in front of.  He goes outside a lot, is on a BARF diet including veg. but no joy.

Thanks for your help.

Evening primrose oil might help - supposed to be really good for skin and coat.  You can use capsules or liquid - I use capsules for my dog (he had skin problems last Sept but looks great now).  They do take about 4-6 weeks to start working, and it's one capsule for every 10 kg of bodyweight.

Have you tried human shampoo???????
I get the stuff from boots/superdrug thats got Calomine in it. (about £1 a time) And my dogs look great on it.
I find that dog shampoo(even the gentle ones) are too harsh for dogs skin.

Are you feeding him extra Omega 3s in the form of Fish Body Oils?  If not I would try adding these to the diet; the capsules are easily available from health food stores or chemists.  Be sure it is FBO not Cod Liver Oil though.  A maintenance dose would be 1000mg per day.  You don't say how large your dog is but with that I would also give Vitamin E, 400 iu per day for a large dog, 200 iu per day for a small one as they have a synergistic effect.

Everytime I wash my puppy (which for a week was everyday due to rolling in his own mess!!), he gets bad dandruff even with gentle puppy shampoo.  Washing makes it a lot worse so unless he really needs the shampoo maybe consider just as rinse with water or try some of the remedies as mentioned above.

why can't you use cod liver oil?

Cod Liver Oil contains Vitamins A and D which are fat soluble and which can be toxic of too high a dose is given.  CLO is fine for the occasional use in winter but not for daily dosing IMHO.

oh okay,as i give both mine a cod liver oil tab everynow and then when there coats are dull, but thats what the breeder told me to give them, but i'll try the one you spoke about instead now instead.

Hi,

By washing him you get rid of the natural oils in his coat - try a damp chamois leather instead.

Is he coming into moult?  This is the only time now that mine seem to get dandruffy
