We are looking into getting a dog and are very interested in the Small Munsterlander but cannot find anyone who breeds them in the UK. Does anyone know of a Breeder or can suggest other avenues ? Thanks.

Not sure there are any in the UK, if there are there would only be one of two so you may have to import. Perhaps one of the smaller gundogs would suit you, the small munsterlander is not too unlike the Springers, English or Welsh, Brittany or may be the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, a bit smaller the Kooikerhondje. Know if your heart set it is hard to change your mind but you may find another breed that appeals and would be easier to come by.

Yep, being of the Springer family it is 'similar' to the others from what I have seen and the Duck Retriever looks interesting. Never heard of the Koolikerhonje although I wouldn't want anything smaller than a spaniel and was orginally looking at much larger dogs (which I prefer) like the GSP and Weimaraner but these breeds seem to get very anxious if left alone at all. The large Munster is also a possibility as according to write-ups I've seen they seem to be very similar to the small Munster in temperament etc The local pub also owns one and he is lovely.

There was a litter of Small Munsterlanders born in the UK just before Christmas, all are now homed.  I doubt that there will be anymore readily available for a while.  If you take a look at http://www.smallmunsterlander.co.uk you'll be able to view the breeders website of this UK litter.

The small munsterlander is not as yet recognised by the KC but there is one person I believe breeding them however I have no idea of the quality, availability etc.  If you like the small one you may like the large or the German Longhair Pointer all of whom belong to the HPR group of gundogs.

Why does the kennel club not recognise them ? The breed has been around for around 500 years it is believed. Is it to do with the no in the country or something ? Also you do not mention who the breeder is, why not ?

Because there was not till the said litter any around to recognise, there has to be a big enough gene pool in a breed for it to be recognised.

It is not good form to mention anyones name without their permission, unless it is already in the public domain, you have the link to the web site and you should be able to make contact through that.
