He certainly wants attention doesn't he! A short term solution would be to get your husband before he leaves work to give puppy an activity ball with treats in, this may entertain him and distract him from wanting you to come downstairs.
I don't know what you do when you do come downstairs when he starts barking, do you talk to him or pet him? Perhaps when you do come downstairs when he barks you just ignore him until he stops and then resume your normal routine. I'm no expert but there are plenty on this forum who are and I'm sure another post will come along with a longer term solution or a reason why he demands your attention in particular, shortly.
Meanwhile, there is a fairly interesting post (and quite amusing) called Clothes Smelling where some posters have wondered why thier dogs are choosing to remove or destroy items of clothing belonging only to them but leaving the rest of the family's things alone (including me)
Another example of this is if either of mine at any stage have an upset tummy and need to go out in the middle of the night, they ALWAYS wake me up. The will enter the bedroom, walk all the way around the other side of the bed and grumble at me, completely ignoring my husband who is otherwise the first contact. I'm sure it's a conspiracy...
Good luck
