Hi Jo,
Lovelylady is right, ringcraft is a good way of getting started, also have you thought about doing some exemption shows to see how you get on (and if you like it), that's how we got started.  Also, it might be worth getting in touch with your dogs breeder to get their opinion as to whether your dogs good enough.
Happy showing!

Sarah.

Hi Jo
firstly your dog must be KC registered to enter any show except companion shows.
Next ..ring craft is a good place to teach you and your dog how to show
Go along and watch some shows...champ shows on pastoral day will be your best bet as you can then see how BC are shown...all dogs are shown in a diferent way.
Next get a schedule...dog world and our dogs paper will give you contact no's for the shows...champ shows entry close 8 weeks prior to the show, open shows about 3.
Puppy class=6-12 months. junior=12-18 months.
Lastly...go and have fun..don't take it too seriously....and BEWARE ..its very addictive

agree with Archer it is very addictive and you know when you are hooked when you get withdrawel symptons when you have a weekend off no shows.

Thanks all of you, how do I get into the companion shows???

Companion shows are advertised in the dog papers mentioned above. You enter on the day, so just turn up and enjoy yourself!

Daughter and I put Tara into a companion show last August for a laugh. We had only ever been to one dog show before, never been to ringcraft and had never even thought of entering a dog before. Tara won her class :D So it can happen :D

Hi Jo,

If I were you (and this is the way I did it) I'd start at exemption/companion shows.  They're a lot of fun, and everybody is there to enjoy themselves.
Sometimes, breeders take their young dogs to these shows to give them ring experience.....it's not serious.  Dogs don't need to be kc reg'd.

We moved on to open shows...which are not as serious as champ shows, but can get quite competitive! For these, your dog needs to be registered, and you'll pay a small entry fee....usually a few pounds.

The best thing to do is get a subscription to one of the dog papers, for companion/open and champ shows.  A lot of companion shows will be advertised in local papers/shop windows/etc.

The main thing to remember is...Have fun!  That's what it's all about.  At the end of the day, you always come home with the best dog..whether you win or lose.  As long as you and the dog enjoy yourselves, that's all that matters.

Go for it.  Best of luck,

Lisa
