Dora, since i got her keeps nipping everyone she comes into contact with, im not sure if this is playing or could it be real nastyness coming out?
She wiggles her tail and makes a  wee wingey sound when she runs up to people especially at home, my main worry's are the bairns as where i live there are alot of them.
I would not say that she hurts when she nips but i am concerned if it gets worse.
thankyou in advance for any replies to my posting.

This might cause eruptions- it's not intended to but here goes- I give one short sharp slap- obviously not enough to knock the dogs head off but enough to make them stop.  Other people have differing views and it is important to get all views since what works for one may not for another- I'm just telling you what I did and what I found to work but I have GSD's and sometimes they can be very persistant lets just say ;-)

Hi Stacey, i do give her a wee tap on her nose to correct her nipping but my friend also a dog owner tells me not to as you can damage their noses and sense of smells?
I have instead started to grab hold of her collar and give her a sharp tug and say leave?

Try grabbing her either side of her face (it doesn't hurt- if it did they'd be crying) and glare at her while saying 'no' as firmly and sternly as you can- hold the glare for a few more seconds- mine hate that and will stop.  I wouldn't say it's nastiness coming out though- my next door neighbours kid used to bite all the other kids at 3 years old- he grew out of it though- it's a stage a lot of kids (like puppies) go through- and a good smack never hurt him :-)  I told you everyone has different views on it- but you're not smacking so hard that it damages their nose or sense of smell- just like you wouldn't slap a kid hard enough to bruise or mark them.  Hope I'm making sense here :-)  It's all about shock- if you give a quick slap then they're shocked just the same as if you grab them quickly- they're shocked- I'm sure if you grab her collar when she's unaware really quickly and pull her back this would be the same.

Hi Stacey,

I once made the mistake of recommending exactly the same thing.

I think it is the last thing you do when everything else fails to get the dog's attention - a quick tap on the top of nose.  Or, hand over muzzle and and very gentle, but firm pressure.  Neither should be with enough force to hurt the dog.
