I thought we got a bit more "proper" coverage tonight - did you see Colin Dowson being interviewed for the Breeders Stakes, Daisy???    We'll have to call him sir tomorrow:D :D :D

Just loved the black lab who won gundogs - and the springer - I thought the Clumber owner looked disappointed though......

Now to bed - an early start (5.30) for tomorrow

Wish us luck - and good luck to everyone else

did seem better tonight but they could of cut the tour out of new york and got straight to westminster and seen more of there showing, but if you have ever watched best of breed video you get the just of what goes on lol,and the bit about the stuffed dogs, rather see real ones, enjoyed the bit about breeder stakes, saw more dogs than last night though, suppose we can't have everything.

I agree hippy if they had of cut that they might have fitted all the best of breeds in .if i had of judged i would have picked the english setter followed by flat coated and cocker . but i couldent see the cockers that well so i might have put em first on closer inspection , lol :D

We competed yesterday in the Breeders Stakes. There were about 25 groups of dogs in the main ring before the final cut. It would have made a wonderfull picture , even if just briefly as a tribute to those of us who trekked to Birmingham to be judged in a tiny side ring before being herded in to the main ring for all of let me think 5 minutes. Never again. And for the second night running I queued to get out of the car park but at least it was only 20 minutes and not the 3 and a half hours from the night before. Jan

Good luck to everyone for Saturday :)

I missed tonights show :( can someone fill me in what was showed? why cant they just do a huge show on sunday showing in depth view of crufts ?
- By Daisy [gb] Date 06.03.04 21:16 UTC
They showed the dog obedience - quite a bit of it, which was good. Also some rubbish game with two of the presenters, which was a waste of time :( A few little bits about agility and flyball - will be on tomorrow. Then the two groups - working and pastoral, but they only give the briefest of descriptions on a few breeds and then show the final judging. Wish that they went into a bit more detail on the breed judging ie the differences between two dogs of the same breed and why one might be better than the other  :(

At least our breed got second in Pastoral :)

Two hours tomorrow - don't miss it :)

You have to remember that the BBC is also catering for people who are not as doggy as we are. I got the clues to the dogs easily but the general public may not have got them so quickly. The programme has to cater for all tastes and yes it would be nice to see more of what WE want but we aren't everyone!

We see very little of the different breeds. They could also give a bit of an explanation of how the dogs qualify for Crufts and how the best of breed is arrived at etc. I don't think that silly games is the best way to use the time :)

That Giant Schnauzer looked wonderful on the green carpet in the big ring........he I am sure is a strong contender for tomorrow night.  I do wish him luck.........am a bit biased I suppose having given him a CC and BOB last year!

Im not so sure , everyone ive spoken to said they would love to watch crufts , and most people have watched it . tennis isent for everyone either it footy but we still get it shoved in our faces :( i wish they would at least put it on sky/digital/cable .

I did not think much to the obedience heelwork. Most handlers were kneeing their dog even walking in a straight line! It would never have done in my day! I know that over the years I've got use to "Working Gundog" heelwork but could not help wondering how they would get on walking over a muddy sloping field with their dog wrapped right around their leg?

Best wishes, John

i loved the aussie best of breed-i thought it a clear winner, !!!!!   thought the st bernard had a strange rear gait ??/  was i the only one.
- By Polly [gb] Date 07.03.04 00:03 UTC
I thought the St Bernard was not moving properly too. Or was it a mirage in my fevered mind, that made me think I'd seen a dog on tv at Crufts?????????

I thought several of the mastiff breeds seemed to have a limp!

Agree with you John.  It's heelwork for competition and not heelwork for real life.

John I agree when i judged obedience laying on(the style now accepted as correct in obedience)was one of my bete noirs Mind you I have a BC who works that way naturally & I never worked in competition because of that with him

If anyone wonders why the dogs were not petted or played with in the obedience it was because the judge told them they would be penalized if they did at anytime in the ring. I don't think they were even allowed to say Good boy/girl which is very sad as most dogs are trained with lots of play these days

A lot of the handlers looked very unhappy
