I've just spoken to a couple down the road who we know quite well see them out and about and in the pub etc, strangely I never knew they had a dog until now.
Anyway they just aproached me with their JRT to say how jealous they are of our whippet and wished they had looked into different breeds a bit more because they didn't realise how much energy a JRT had, and couldn't believe our whippet would just curl up in the pub and go to sleep.
The terrible thing is their now thinking of rehoming their 5 month!!! old JRT because he never sleeps and is always bounding around, and have decided to get a retired Greyhound. I've persuaded them not to rush into anything by saying he's only a baby and he will settle down but they seem set on it.
What really annoys me is that they know absolutely nothing about JRTs, they are both intelligent proffessional people but when it came to choosing a breed of dog their only criteria was that it was small !! sorry to rant but they've really annoyed me.

p.s he's absolutely lovely as well

Hi Steve,
I do wish people would do a bit more research before buying a puppy!  That's how so many end up in rehoming centres.

Small does not always mean quiet which is what they have learnt een though it's the hard way. It's a shame when he's only being a Jack Russell, and doing it well it seems. :)

If they want a small dog they are totally off beam with retired greyhounds - the dogs are BIG, and while the bitches are smaller they are still Dr Lorelei's measurement of medium dog size - I think a Leonberger is quite big, Danes are big and Labs are small. We looked at retired greys and decided the tribe and Manic Morse would be too much for any dog looking for a quiet retirement :D Do they also realise the work required to accustom ex racing dogs to life off track? To you and I its not a lot and a pleasure to see the results, but to this pair it could be a hurdle. Hey ho, no doubt the rescue will weed em out. Poor little JRT, I hope he goes to breed rescue and not an ad in the paper.

I think on the Greyhound front its a case of them realiseing what they wanted all along was an easy to live with dog not a small dog, I do hope the rescue people do weed them out because to be honest i'd hate them to get their hands on one of my favourite dogs.( and I don't mean that in a selfish way).
I'd love to know when they actually take their JRT out because they've had it from 8 weeks old its 5 months now and i've never seen it before today.

p.s don't worry i'll make sure it doesn't appear in any paper

That's the problem, isn't it? People look at a small dog and think 'easy dog', without realising that many dogs (such as terriers) are only small because they need to fit into small spaces. They are working dogs who need an active job, or else they are a pain, because they are frustrated!

I also have a Whippet and his name is Chandler. My second dog is a English Cocker Spaniel and her name is Phantom. I hate people see a pretty puppy or dog on T.V. and get them and realize it's to much dog for them. Another problem is people get dog from a back breeders and have heath problems and temper problems. Pay the extra money and get a better dog. To get back to to your problem the only thing is trading dogs if you don't exercise the dog your be in the same boat. I would tell your friend to go to Obedience classes to to teach the J.R.T. to be good dog and to teach him or her to be around other dogs. Another good thing about going to trainer if you have any problems they can help. If the dog has Obedience then you can try Agility and maybe Flyball. The idea is to give J.R.T. something to do he or she will become a better dog. Please let them know that their other things you can do. I hope that helps you and let us know how things are going?
