I feed Nutro two my Whippet and English Cocker Spaniel. I was wondering is that a good dog food? My trainer feeds Nutro to her dogs too. Please help me to understand the good dog food to the worse dog food.

The best dog food is the one that your dog enjoys and looks good on ;-)

We've just started feeding our dog raw (and our puppy) and the 7yr old dog has never looked better (or never smelt better - his breath used to peel off wallpaper!).  The puppy was not eating her kibble (dont blame her personally) and since changing over to raw she is absolutely adoring her food. its soo wonderful to see.
So for me, i would say raw meaty bones. but lots of people dont want to do this beacuse of the risks. there are lots of ways you can feed this diet though, without having to feed it full on. :)

I feed Burns, which i rate as about the same as Nutro and they're definitely some of the better ones.

Hi Kate,

The best dry, complete dog foods derive the majority of their protein content from meat or meat meal (no "derivatives" of meat, no or very low in "by-products" of meat) and they do not contain artificial preservatives or colourings.

Moist foods should be essentially the same as the above, but ideally they should not contain preservatives of any kind.  The cooking and packaging process should suffice to preserve the contents.

Brand name is not important.  If the food has an ingredient list as long as your arm, it's coloured or pressed into cute shapes -- stay away from it.  If the ingredient list is very short, the contents are brown and boring -- you should then spend the time to read the label.

I feed Nutro as well and my crew are doing great on it. I even have my ferrets on the kitten food. It is what works best for your dog and what your dog does the best on. Since every dog is different some food may not be good for one but good for another. Like Stacey says it all depends what is in the dog food. I like a food that starts with a meat meal or meat and has no by-products in it and not preserved with BHA,BHT, or Ethoxyquin. The more meat to me the better, but I find this food good....If you do a search I think that Nutro has been discussed on here awhile ago and you will be able to read lots :)

I have a 9 month old pup on Burns at the moment and he is always hungry and after the other dogs food, we have fed alsorts over the years that were supposed to be the best at the time, but the dogs do not seem to know that they are the best and will not always eat what I want them to.The older one are on Dr Johns very cheap but they all eat it and love it and it keeps there coats and skin right and they are full of energy. I would prefer to feed tripe/minced chicken and a good wholemeal biscuit etc all the time, but when we are away my daughter that dog sits will not touch it and as we can be away for up to 3 months at a time in show season I have to go with what works
