Please remember this is my first pup...but he does seem to pant a lot. Vet said his heart was okay etc (yes I took him a while back about the panting!!) but his tongue hangs out (dry) and his body does move up and down a lot when he is doing it. He will be 7 months on 5 April. He doesnt really sleep from 6pm when I get in as he wants my attention all the time and when I move from room to room so does he. But he does sleep during the day when my husband is with him. It is not panting after a run or anything just on and off a bit from about 9pm. In fact he doesnt really do it as badly after a game or run. He will stop and then start again an hour later. At the moment he is lying on his side panting with his little belly moving up and down. He is completely happy though and wants a cuddle/stroke when I go up to him (or anything else he thinks I might give him) :o

Am I being overly stupid again. Many thanks Gina.

Hopefully you are being over protective Gina I think so . but im always scared to say its ok as you can only guess from what you have been told
I think if the vet says he is fine then he is . just enjoy Barney and I must say you are very good with him Mari

If I remember rightly he is of a coated breed? It may be that the ambient temperature in your house is a bit warm for him. I always keep my kitchen cold for the dogs, and they will often ago in there or ask to go and lie outside to cool off!

When my BC was panting a lot it was because she was running a fever but then she did have cancer so it was expected :-(

If your're not happy I would go back to the vet for another check, possibly see a different one, but hopefully if your vet has checked him over thoroughly and he's a good vet then his all clear diagnosis should be correct.

Have you spoken to the breeder for their advice ?

Gina, I think Barney probably just gets a bit hot - remember Lhasas have an incredibly thick coat in order to withstand those Tibetan winters! It's not quite the same here, is it? Tilly pants quite a lot too. Just make sure that he always has plenty of water around and if you are at all worried, contact your vet again, although I'm pretty sure that there is nothing seriously wrong.

Thanks everyone. Now I think of it if he cannot go outside cos the door is shut he does lie in the draft by the front door so may be it is because the house is too hot. I shall turn down the temperature for the next few days (daughter in America to see her boyfriend so no moans from that angle!!). I have been keeping the place a bit hot because of my ill cat. So perhaps I will leave the door open instead of turning down the heating. Many many thanks. Gina

Sounds like you've found the source of your problem :-)

I hope so Claire! It is amazing though that once you (meaning me) put things into writing and ask for advice what is given makes you think a bit more instead of panicking. Ta very much everyone. Gina

Could it be a nervous/stress thing. Our Max pants a lot if he's been outside barking at our neighbours and doesn't calm down for about 3/4 of an hour or it could be a tempertaure related thing.

I'm glad I'm not the only neurotic one Gina!! I was thinking about writing a similar question about my 9 month old labrador. She pants alot, but just after she's been running about. Also when she's lying down you can see her heart beating. I'm sure she's fine but I do worry sometimes :-)

Nope nothing wrong at all, I got my dog when he was an adult and took a while for me to learn to 'read' him. He has 3 types of panting, there is the -

May I remind you that you are on mountain bikes and I am not - puffed but happy!

I am really enjoying this and can we do it some more - usually happens during find the biscuit.

And finally the I am a little bit stressed and could you do something please? - This happens acompanied by dribble and he was doing it only this morning at the vets.

Editted to add - this is in agreement with Gina/Mari etc.

I was quite reassured yesterday because I took Thistle out with her mum and sister and half sister. The people who bred Thistle were away for the weekend and I said I'd exercise their 3 dogs. Anyway you've never seen so many pink, panting tongues. They were all just as 'panty' as Thistle:-)
