Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Amichien Bonding....
- By PeteESS [gb] Date 23.03.02 11:55 UTC
Hello all,

I was wondering if anybody has tried Amichien Bonding. I've just finished Jan Fennell's book and found the concepts facinating, we are going to try the tequniques with our soon to be adopted ESS, and were wondering if anyone has had experiance with it?

I notice alot of people posting here poo poo the "behaviourists" and wondered whether this is because it's a new concept or whether people find it hard to ignor their dogs for five minutes to establish & enforce the leader role?

Regards
Pete

We tried the Amichien bonding with Max but with little effect but we think he's a particularly strong willed individual. We were considering getting Jan Fennels company in to have a look at our 'pack' but the only insurance that covers her costs is the Kennel Club and we're currently not with them. Maybe it was our implementation of the Amichien bonding - after watching her Dog Listener series she had great success with it on the dogs on the program.

yes i have read both books and it does or has truely helped with both my dogs they seem to have calmed down, and it is slightly helping with my dog lucy who is very nervous towards other dogs.
it is very hard to ignore my to when they are jumping in my face and screaming and howling for me to pay attention but after 10 mins they calm down

I am really not keen on Jan Fennel - she charges way too much, and gives the same programme for every dog seemingly, regardless of circumstances. She has given bad advice to people witha BC when it needed its brain stimulating, and she said it needed to be ignored.....dog was going nuts.

Bythe way I am hoping to eventually offer a behavioural service myself, when I feel l can offer an excellent service (still a long way to go :D) so am not anti :)

Best wishes
Lindsay

Hi All,

I undertake behavioural and training work in my spare time but do not charge (if people want to give something, I ask that it's donated to the relevant breed rescue).

I have to say that I find Jan Fennell's techniques work for me. They do need adapting to different circumstances, but on the whole they do work.

It is very much down to the individual dog. In the case of nervous dogs that I have owned, I have raised their ranking and then implemented the alpha role and this has worked well (though not to be recommended for every nervous dog!).

I think if you go by doggy language, you won't go far wrong. I had a staffie that had to be put to sleep with aggression problems and this is how I got into behavioural work as I had failed him. Behavioural modification has to go hand in hand with training - both work together.

Working dogs need a different approach, they need mental stimulation. My two would go barmy if they were not set challenges every day!

Kind Regards.

Alison.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the comments. I have just ordered Jan's new book too, the review says it's a 30 day program for implementing her techniques, I was wondering how I was going to start it:)

I think the reason alot of the advice sounds similar is because alot of people think they can teach their dog human language rather than learn "dog language" themselves. Once the dog believes it is the leader of the pack thats where all the problems stem from, which makes a similar diaognosis logical. I suppose techniques will have to be taylored to individual circumstances because there will be a different bag of mixed messages to the dog from each individual owner, causing different symptoms, but the root cause probably remains the same.

I can't wait for our ESS to arrive so we can get started. I'm sure I will be on here quite a bit when he/she arrives, I've not trained a dog for 15 years so I expect all previous teachings to be out of date, rightly so, I cringe at some of the advice I was given at "training classes" back then. The "trainer" was still of the "rub it's nose in it" brigade, I sincerely hope this advice went out with the ark.

Thanks again for the comments, I know I'm not about to start wasting my time now;)

Regards
Pete
