Topic Dog Boards / General / The truth about weims...

As some may know im looking into my next breed now, i have a list to take tomorrow of the gundog breeds i like.
The weim is one i love, along with the curly.

My question : are male weims aggressive towards other dogs, ive heard they are combative with them, is this true?
I Like male dogs, so would hope for a male dog, but obvious dont want to get a weim if i have to muzzle him etc.

Thanks in Advance xx

If you have never had a dog before then a Weimaraner is not necessarily the best choice for a first dog IMHO, still less a male.

To fully understand a breed it is necessary to research for what they were originally bred.  In the case of the Weimaraner they produced by the nobles of the Weimar republic for tracking wounded stag, bringing down wild boar, ridding the estate of vermin (foxes and cats) and protecting their master.  It is a member of the HPR group and as such possesses a great deal of initiative which it will use whether it is chanelled correctly or not!  It has a very strong hunting instinct which if not directed can get itself into a lot of trouble.  They are extremely intelligent and require a great deal of training for the first two years of its life and a huge amount of exercise when mature.

They need something to do and so preferably a home where field trials, working trials, working tests or agility features would be a plus.

They DO like to be top dog but in general will not start anything but they will sure as hell finish it off!  It is unfortunate that a great many people have them who should not as they have neither the experience, nous, physical or mental strength to match them; it is also true that many have poor temperaments due to cash crop "breeders" using unsuitable sires and dams.

In general I would say that weimaraners are not really "doggy" dogs say like your labs, goldies etc, they are independent by nature, tend to attach themselves to one member of the family.  They are not "aggressive" per se but there are individuals (as there are in all breeds) who are not particularly sociable.

There will be loads of weimis there tomorrow (inc me) so pick a few brains.  I love em but they are not the dog for everyone.

Are you interested in short or longhaired ones?

thanks for the reply,
I have owned dogs before, retrievers and smaller dogs.
I understand weims are not for the average owner, so thats why im finding out about all these breeds before i decide! thanks for the breed info
Ill probably pick your brains tomorrow if i see you !
Ill be the mad blonde who cant stop goo-ing over the dogs!

I love the long haired ones, but then i also love the short haired ones, both very stunning!

i guess if i want an undocked one as i would, id have to go for a long haired, although i do know one breeder of undocked weims.

How many do you own?

Only one longhaired bitch at the moment with whom I compete in Working Trials mainly.

If you want an undocked one some reputable breeders will leave the tail on but will ask for a deposit first.  There are several reputable breeders who do not dock; there are very few longhairs.  Out of the 2,900 weims born last year only around 25 were longs!
