Topic Dog Boards / General / can you use a dog guard
- By jules [us] Date 03.03.04 19:00 UTC
Is it okay to use a dog guard in the car instead of a cage?  I am getting a weimaraner puppy in a few weeks and some people have said get a cage and others have said just use a dog guard.  I would get a proper one from the car manufacturers, but I am a little confused as I get differing opinions.  All I want is what will be best for my dog.

Thanks for any advice

Of course you can just use a dog guard - but if you want what is safest then choose the dog cage Jules.  This will protect and keep your puppy secure in case of any bumps you might be unfortunate enough to have, and also will prevent your puppy from being able to jump out of the car when you open the boot.
Choose one that is large enough to be comfortable for your puppy when he's grown into the adult version :)

I agree with Lara, the cage is also so adaptable, you can use it, if you don't have an indoor kennel, for the house, leave your tailgate up in hot weather, the dog cannot chew the inside of your car or leave snot all over the windows and unless the dog guard is properly bolted it will fold in a crash with a fully grown weimaraner hitting it!  If you can, get one with escape doors in case of a rear end shunt!

Hi Tohme I have been on a website called Hamster baskets and they make the cages to fit your individual car, they also do escape doors at the back, so I might get one from them, as I have a separate one for the house anyway so I can just leave the one in the car permanently.

Barnesbrook (silent), Barjo, Guardsman, MMG they all do custom made car cages and they last forever!

we only used our dog guard once. we were travelling to a show and reef (a 70 pound bulldog!) managed to squeeze under it and pounced on hubbs !. he was trying to steer the car while i dragged reef off. never again !!.

Jules, I have a cage from hamster baskets and it is excellent.  Highly recommended.
