Hi all, not been around for a while so catching up on all the gossip. The problem we have is that our 8 month old Akita bitch Kira has just come out of her season and seems to be getting worse controlling her wee when getting excited. She doesn't have any physical problems (checked with the vet) more actually squats when she see's somebody she knows or recognises. We do the usual ie ignore her, telling her off, puting her outside but it doesn't seem to wok. Is she just still a puppy and therefor expect this behaviour for a while or is there some training I can do for her. She does go to regular puppy classes but because of her season she has not been for a month.
Any thoughts or ideas
Thanks
Hoppy

Our old lab did this. Make sure that you greet her outside, where it doesn't matter. Don't make a big deal of it, and don't be too OTT when you greet her, and I'm sure she'll grow out of it.

As Jeangenie says - it's a problem which needs managing rather than direct training. She's now a mature bitch and it's her dog way of saying 'I know I'm submissive to you - see' which will go a long way for her in doggie communication. Taking her outside to greet people, and encouraging her to sit and give a paw will help (most dogs find it hard to submissive wee when sitting straight enough to give a paw) Don't look her in the eye as you approach, drop your shouldars, turn your head away - this are the sorts of things we can do that simulate a non agressive dogs approach. Thanks Digger & Jeangenie, very useful info :)
She does seem to be much worse with myself rather than Vicky. I'll try tonight when I get home from work. I can only describe it as like cutting your arm ignoring Kira, she is so well behaved, amazing temperment with all walks of life and gorgeous looking, a real bear and already 25 inch at the withers and coming up to 6 & half stone, she is going to be a big girl when she grows up (she is 8 months old now)
The thing that really bothers me is that I want her to have the run of house when we go to bed (currently she sleeps in the dinning room and Conservatory) but I am sure that when I come down stairs to go to work she will make a mess every where.
Ps does any one have any pictures of their Akitas?

Hi, our Akita male did this until he was around 10 months - good job we've got quarry tiles. It seemed to be that he was just so delighted to see people that he couldn't hold it. He did grow out of it tho' (thank goodness!)

My akita bitch did the same until about 15 months old but only with my mother in law who she loved more than most - it seemed to be out of excitment. She did grow out of it but I am always weary of the fact that she may do it again - but hey the joy of dogs

I read in the book i got this morning (thanks tohme!) its Culture Clash. It mentioned something about dogs displaying this behaviour with other dogs (didnt mention the human bit) and that it was due usually to not enough socialisation early on. When i read more i'll come back to you!
