I've been a qualified microchipper for a while now & always do my litters of pups before they go to their new homes. Occasionally I do other people's litters as well.
I had a breeder who was 'running on' 2 pups & asked me to microchip them around 3 months' old. The rest of the litter was not microchipped before being sold on the advice of their vet.
These people are licensed breeders & recently had a Council check to renew the license. The inspector checked every dog's microchip & couldn't find one of the pup's chips which I implanted. They supposedly found it in his chest! The official proceeded to give the breeder a lecture about microchips, saying a puppy should never be microchipped, or certainly never before 3 months old as the chips always move.
Naturally I am shocked about the chip moving & have yet to verify it with my own scanner. But what about breeders' responsibilities ensuring that every puppy that leaves them is traceable in some way?
Also what is the general opinion on microchipping puppies?
At the moment I feel as if my training has been a complete waste of time if vets are giving out this sort of information.
Any feedback would be gratefully appreciated.
