Hello Fiona, I have used a supplement called Fit & Fertile with some success on Yankee bitches. They tend to drop coat around the time of their seasons. It's not a 100% effective though, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I would think that if we're talking about a male, theres probably not alot you can do, there's certainly no magic potion. Just make the best of what he has, and present him to the best of your ability.

Hi Fiona, do you brush  him between baths?  This is one of the most common mistakes people make, which causes coat loss.  Ours are only brushed out when being blow dried.  Secondly, do you use a good quality conditioner?  Sometimes if you use a coat spray (like Mink Oil or All systems Lanolin) after a bath on non show days, it can help.  We use evening primrose oil and cod liver oil supplements.  Also, we make sure the dogs in full coat are bathed and dried out after excercise, if they get at all muddy and/or damp.  Letting the coat dry out with mud or dirt on it makes it brittle and likelly to snap.  However, you also have to bear in mind (as Dawn said) that you cant always make happen what nature hasnt provided for - some Yanks just dont carry a full coat!

Hi Fiona,  No I'm not going down to Home Counties - too far just before Crufts.  Mike is taking Evelyn, though, along with the rest of the gang.  She blew some coat on her last season before Christmas, but it is coming back beautifully, unfortunatly, not yet completely  back :)  Amy will be able to give you excellent advice about the coat, she is a very talented and capable groomer.  Ambrose descendants usually carry loads of coat, in fact some of the boys have way too much! (which is a lovely problem to have).I knew some of Jackies bitches quite well, but not all of them, it would depend very much waht was behind that side of the pedigree if a lack of coat came that route.  But if it looks good, dont panic, remember the standard call for coat not to be so profuse it obsucres movement ;)  When Dexter was a baby we used to put him down in the All Systems lanolin mixed with their Botanical conditioner.  It was very effective.  Caroline Lee Farnsworth used to be the agent for All systems, but I think various of the trade stands now stock it (including Hub) so you should get it at Crufts OK.  Will put a schedule for Northern club in the post tomorrow,  you should be able to turn it round and get it back to Janice straight away without a problem.

the babes had a whale of a time at ringcraft.  Jerry was a little superstar and moved up and down beautifully, Jennifer refused point blank, but held her stacked pose wonderfully both on the table and on the mat, and then floated along to go back to her place in the line!  You would have thought she msut never have dreamed of putting the brakes on!  To be honest, it is really Jerry we are concentrating on, Jennifer will only be coming along to keep him company, and help keep up numbers for JW points, as quite a few pups are showing up here this year, and it is a shame if they miss points because not enough are present.  She has far too much white on her throat and chest to be succesful, but I think she will have fun anyway.  She has a head to die for, and so much attitude.

Hi Fiona, if you put emoticons or smileys into search it should come up with some threads which explain how to do them -- there are lots, but I can usually only remember ;)  & :).

Of course  I know Tantrums & Tiaras, will think about the pedigrees and see if any coat problems appeared anywhere.  We always knew this litter would be largley mismarked, as they are a hybrid from Parti/Solid parents.  Just been very lucky that Jerry has only a tiny amount of white (like his Father Englebert).  Good luck on sunday, and will no doubt see you Friday.

Been reading this thread with interest. I bath Beano about once a week - once a fortnight. If you are only meant to brush after a bath, How do you keep the tangles out???? Is there something to can get to help keep tangles out?? I brush beano about twice a week, and can see, If I didnt brush him that often he would have alot of mats
Lea :)
- By Dawn-R Date 28.02.04 22:07 UTC
Hi Lea, you can brush Beano as much as you like to keep the knots down. It's only an issue with a show coat, one where you want to preserve as much coat volume as possible. Show coated Yanks are bathed every three or four days so that the coat can be brushed and kept knot free. The hair is much stronger when it's wet so you get less breakage. Also a good conditioner is essential so that the brush passes through the coat easily. I always leave just a mere trace of the conditioner in the coat after the bath. I then tackle any tats with a soft slicker brush working from the end of the hair to the root. then I dry using a pin brush to straighten the hair. You do still get coat loss, but it's minimal and dead hair has to come out to allow new growth.
Bitches drop a bit of coat at the time of their season, and generally carry less than a dog anyway. Blacks tend to carry the heaviest coats but there always exeptions to that rule.
See you next week.

Hi Dawn & Lea,  Dawn - Beano is a Rocko son, so carries a very healthy amount of coat ;).  Lea, Dawn is dead right on the coat care issue.  you dont need to panic, you are doing just right with your routine.  It is only the full show coat which requires they very frequent bath and blow dry regime.  This is why we rarely recomend that pets are kept in a full coat, the upkeep is way beyond the average pet home time commitment.

Is that good or bad Gwen (being a Rocko son) ????????????
Would love to know his pedigree, so I can go hunting for his reletives on the net and at crufts!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok, I am nosey!!!!! But would love to see his 'family'.
Glad I am doing the grooming right!!! I dont know how you can cope with Yanks in there full coat, but by god, they look beautiful when they are :)

Thanks Nursery. I dont think Beano will have any problems with thin coat!!!!!!!!!! his coat is soooo thick!!!!!! (oh he if buff!!!!!!!)
I have l;eft a trace of conditioner on his hair when I bath him, It seems to work. I did have a problem when he was castrated, I couldnt groom the underside of him for 3 weeks. It was wasnt very good when I did groom it, so his hair under there is slightly shorter now!!!!!!!!
Is there anywhere at crufts I can see Yanks with a pet trim????????? I have been trimming him miyself(dont want to take him to a groomers as have seen a yank that is all clipped off that went to a groomers!!!!) I need some proper clippers as have had to scissor cut his front legs, but left his back legs as he was getting too restless. Would really like to see a dog with a pet trim, so I can get hints!!!!!!!]

Hello Lea, when you are at Crufts you should look out for a bitch called Adeva Wrangle Tan Girl. I'm not sure if she'll be there or not, BUT, she is Beano's daughter. So fingers crossed. You will find quite few half brothers and sisters.
Rocko is Am Ch Laurent's Shamrock Show'n'Tell to Mycalleys. You'll also see a gorgeous nephew, Afterglow Give me Sunshine, his mother is Beano's lovely sister Sheila.
With regard to seeing any in pet trim, well you might see one on the Discover Dogs stand, but don't hold your breath. Then again if there are any entries in the Veteran classes, sometimes some of them are in pet trim. I have two in pet trim, but I ruthlessly clip them off to the skin every six months. They accompany my Irish Setter through the woods and fields every day in all weathers, so it's very practical. It's amazing how fast the hair grows.I do admit though that they look like a Staffie gone very wrong when they're first done.

Thanks Dawn, I will look out for her :D And can quitely grin that I have her daddy :D does that sound strange when I havnt even bred her?????
I have heard about Sheila from Gwen. Will write the names down.
LOL atr being clipped off. I have wondered about that, but do like him to have long fur, just not show coat!!!!!!!!
I did read on a thread that a junior will be clipping their yank into a pet trim. I cant remember where I saw it tho, so might look out for her on Saturday, but probably wont be able to get near!!!!!!!!!

I do him.
I use human clippers without any attatchments for his cace, top of his head and neck. And I have some small scissors to clip his feet and  tail. I bought some thinning scissors to tide me overm but they were c... useless!!!!!!!!!! I can get away with no good clippers, but not without thinning scissors!!!!!!!
Lea :)
- By f.a.brook [gb] Date 29.02.04 21:47 UTC
i use a 10 blade
i thin the tops of the heads and the top of the tail i strip the back you will prob clip it dont worry if they were cheep im not saying go for the best ever clippers thinners and sissors as long as they work and you feel happy with
bibi for naw fiona
- By Lea Date 29.02.04 21:54 UTC
Nope Fiona, they were useless(II cant use the word I would normally!!!!!!!) They cut the hair, not thinned it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to strip the back, but it hasnt been necessary yet(will probably get some 'strippers' while there.)
And the human clippers wont go thru the long Yank hair!!!! Everyone told me so, but I was more iunterested in clipping the head and neck etc, so got the human clippers, now need to clip the head and belly, I need something more substanitial. I donnot care how much I spend on them. Just as long as they work!!!!!!!!
Lea :D

Hi Lea, just to add to Dawns info, rocko carries a very profuse coat, as do almost all of his kids.  He is almost 9 years old know, and Isaw his yesterday while assisting at a mating.  he still  looks splendid.  I think the discover dogs people are planning to have some pet trim dogs with them on certain days, and we supplied them with lots of phtotos to decortate the stand, including a few of pet trims.  If you see 1 of a Buff on the beach or jumping a tree trunk, then that is Junior, Benos half-brother.
