Topic Dog Boards / General / Am I out of order

I have been looking after 3 dachsunds for a family for about the last 4 years.  I used to walk them twice a week and then look after them when the family are away.  I stopped walking them last year because I just didnt have the time, I also moved into my own house last year (I used to live with my parents and looked after the dogs there) I have looked after the dachsunds a couple of times since and have had nothing but problems, they cock their legs everywhere and even if they have just been for a walk they still come in the house and poo.  I have mostly wood floors but they have stained the only carpet I have (cream - and brand new  ) anyway so I started just shutting them in the kitchen all the time, which is hardly fair on them.  I know they used to cock their legs up my parents sofa/tables/doors etc but mum was never too concerned and just cleaned it up, I know for a fact that they also do this at their own house - their owner has told me !!  I have now said that I wont look after them anymore because they are not only creating more work for me (washing the cream throws from my sofa) but also they are ruining my house.  Another problem I have is other dogs I look after are still managing to smell where they have been (no matter what I use to clean it with) and previously house trained dogs are cocking their legs in my house  im hoping to get a pup soon and it will be a nightmare to house train it if it can smell dachsund pee everywhere :(  The owner isnt very happy that ive said I cant look after them anymore but I dont see why I should have them using my house as a toilet.  Am I out of order for doing this after looking after them for so long ?? does anyone have suggestions for alternatives to kennels ?? i think the owner is probably annoyed because it took alot of time (on my part) for me to get the dogs to trust me and they do really love me, I just cant put up with them anymore :(

I don't blame you at all for not having them. I wouldn't have dogs in my house that aren't properly house trained.

Blondbird it is your choice entirely but if you are going to start resenting them they may pick up on this anyway
Its your house at the end of the day and I imagine its frustrating enough if you had your own dogs doing this never mind someone elses.
If I was the owner and gus was doing this in someone elses house I would be mortified !! Then again if he did it in mine i would be too ! Why have the owners not tried to cure this habit ???

The owners arent what I would call "doggy" people, and dont really have a clue about training, the dogs are very skittish and not good with other dogs or people.  At their own house they have a cat flap but if its cold outside they just piddle in the house.  The owners blame the youngest dog because he hasnt been castrated but ive witnessed it - its ALL of them.  Once I was sat on my parents sofa with a guy who id just been on a first date with, the eldest daschsund walked in - looked at us - then cocked his leg up the sofa  I think he did it for attention because I was with a guy.  Great end to a first date, me on my hands and knees ....... clearing up dog pee :D :D

why havent the owners trained them, its a lot more work cleaning there mess up in the house and getting rid of the smell than it is to toilet train.

I dont think the owners have put in any effort. I know little dogs (especially males) are harder to train but really it is no excuse the dogs are something like 6,4 and 2 years old

Hmm - something odd here. Why did the owners get yet another male after having one and then two who cock their legs up on furniture all the time? why not get a bitch? Oh - unless you mean they all started after they got the youngest one?

And how can theyput up with the smell and so on? I think you are NOT out of order at all, you cant train them either, if the owners aren't helping.

I'm sorry it has all turned pear shaped..... :(

I dont know how they put up with the smell :(

The eldest one was an ex show dog and was kept in kennels so was never properly house trained, I think the middle one is the best behaved, the youngest pees everywhere .......... there was talk of getting a fourth, maybe that will be nipped in the bud when they have to pay for kennels.  I do feel bad though, they are cute little dogs really (although I have to bath them everytime I have them because they smell EXTREMELY doggy)

oh well

You arte not out of order, there is no excuse for that behaviour.
My dog was an ex show/kenneled dog.
Took me a week to house train him near enough totally. Now 4 momnths on, last time he had an accident was 5 weeks ago when I brought him back from the vets after being castrated, out him in the living room while made sure outside was safe, and he couldnt hold it any longer.
He is now 100% house trained. There is noo excuse that because the dog was a kennnel dog it cant be house trained, and I am not surprised you wont have it any more
Its bad enough when your own dogs mess in the house, but guest dogs, you can expect and accident maybe in a strange environment but not that much.
Good on you for sticking up for yourself :D
(sorry for waffling)

Dachsies are notoriously difficult to train. But it can be done.
But sorry like, stuff the owner, your house is more important.
I've got three of these little blighters, aged 4, 5 and 6 and have only just got on top of their toilet training.
They still occasionally have an accident.
When i got my two youngest, i had a really old dog. She wasn't incontinent, just senile and forgot all her toilet training. Therefore the two youngest thought because she did, it was ok for them to go in the house too.
I used crates to get them out the habit.
However my bitch, who has only ever had the ODD accident in my house, seems to think that it's ok to go in other peoples houses, so she has to be watched like a hawk.
I have in the past dogsat for a friend who has another two dachsies. Which was very hard work. The youngest a mini wire, used to wee with excitement and nervousness, so it was very difficult to keep my lot clean. Eventually i stopped looking after them, because i can't afford to keep replacing my carpets.
When it's your own dogs you just try to sort it out, but other peoples dogs are a different story. YOU can try training them, but if it's not carried on when they go home, what's the point.
You're doing the right thing.
