Hi guys, I am back. Just now as I was cooling off the chicken drumsticks I made for my dog, my 3.5 months old dog stole it from the counter top and ate both legs with bones. I know that chicken bones are the worst for dogs. What is going to happen now? I am freaking out that it might cut her intestines and we will have to go through a complicated surgery. I am really paranoid now. Did any one out there have the same problem and what was the outcome. I am going to the vet tomorrow for our puppy shots follow up and I will definitely ask the vet what is going to happen now. But before can anyone assure me that my dog will be all right or I have to watch her closely now so she would not bleed or vomit? Please help.

There is a very small risk that the bones could cause a problem, but it is a small risk. It is likely that the bones will go the same way as the chicken and finnish up on your lawn the next day or so. Do mention it to the vet and should you think the pup is off colour in the next week then straight to the vet.
Don't panic, it is likely to have no effect at all

Why not feed them raw and then this won't happen again. Don't worry dogs are pretty tough.
In future why not feed them raw and let them have the benefits of the minerals etc in the bone as we as just the meat, you can give 4 week old pups chicken wings - they can't eat them at that age but can have a good try :)

Hi, my dog gets a really bad diarrhea from any raw meat. I thought it was only beef, but no, even chicken liver does that to her. And it seems a bit strange to me since my other dogs ate raw meat and were fine, but this one has some problems with her stomach. Anybody knows why she gets this reaction from raw meat? Should I ask the vet about this too?

Hi Alina,
I am sure your drumstick-eating dog will be fine. My sister once wasted good money when her cairn found a chicken bone on the street and swallowed it. Her vet actually had the nerve to keep him in the surgery over night for "observation" - and a fee for nothing. Let us know what your vet says - most likely just to watch and see if there are any problems. Chances are the bone will be absorbed and totally or nearly totally digested.
Cooked bones AND raw bones can cause problems, cooked bones more so because they are dried out and are more likely to splinter before they can be digested. Ask your vet for advice on feeding whole bones, of any kind.

Hi I am back, well actually it is late in the afternoon already.
Well, our vet said the same thing the other doc from an "emergency for pets" did yesterday, 20 mins after the "great dinner" - just wait and watch her behavior, if she starts passing stools with blood, straining or vomiting. So far so good, I keep my fingers crossed. We did have our puppy shots today, four of them, and she seems alright, since I did not feed her from the time she ate the chicken with bones. She did poop though this mornig lilke 4 times and I watched it closely, and then she did not for a day (very unusual for her). I got really worried. Then she had her lunch and my niece came and they played pretty roughly, so she puked everything out, well not everything, only the dry food that has not digested yet (I always add some cooked meat to her dry food for flavor), but then she tried to eat it again. I threw the whole thing out. Good thing she vomited on her blanket, so I washed it and it is all clean again :) She does not look like she is in pain or anything. And she behaves normaly, pretty playful. In fact we got our rabbies shot today and the vet said she would sleep most of the day. But not her, and I was hoping... Later on when my husband came home he took her for a walk and she did go potty, two huge piles of poo. He said he did not see any bones in it, or large objects. But the vet told us to keep a watch one her for two weeks anyways and check her poo if she got it all out. Well this is the update on our story so far. We'll see what tomrrow brings.
