Hi
I have read the comments on the message board about the cons of studing a pet. I have a one year old bulldog with an excellant temprament who is just the perfect pet.
I visited the site with the aim of finding a suitable match but would like to know more from experianced breeders on how his behavoir may change.
Although his mounting has decreased with a little firm training I carnt help feeling sorry for the poor lad, as thats what dogs do! Is it better to not stud him so he wont miss what he's never had, or will it help for him to release a little of his tension.
I look forward to hearing from anyone who can help.

Hello Deb,
Firstly, let me assure you that your dog cannot miss what it has never had! Even puppies may show 'mounting' behaviour - including bitches!!
A 'Stud' dog is usually a dog that is know on the Show Circuit, either in Breed Shows, Working, Agility or similar. In other words the dog becomes known to those who breed, for looks or working ability, and consequently his progeny is normally seen too. Therefore, a good Stud dog will develop regular 'female visitors'. This would obviously be necessary, because once he has been used at stud, he will know what it is 'all about' and therefore 'require a bitch fairly regularly'.
It would not be kind to use a 'pet' dog for the very odd occasion to another 'pet' dog.
Strongly consider having him neutered, it will not alter him in anyway. May even relax him more amongst other dogs (particularly those 'entire' as he will not feel the urge to be in competition with them, or they with him).
If he is a really nice dog, then you can tell anyone who shows an interest of his 'lineage/pedigree', and they in turn can then contact the appropriate Breeders.
Hope this helps,
Denise.
