any advice please.

we had more or less decided on a yorkshire terrier for our new family pet.  however, we have been told by a couple of  people that that they can become very attached to only one person in the family and therefore may get very snappy.  as we have two small children, as did one of the people who offered advice to us, i would be gratfull for any comments.  i realise that small children can easily frighten dogs, particularly puppies, but we would really love to have a dog that can grow up with the family and in every other respect a yorkie would be ideal.

when i was a small child i can remember our first dog in the family and he was a yorkshire terrier, i can remember he was very snappy to me esp when all i wanted was a cuddle from him.
i did tease him though so as my mum said i deserved him snapping at me.
Im an adult now [i think] and i have very good memories of dinky, and i cant ever recall being bitten, just told off  by him for pestering him.and quite rightly too.
I dont recall him ever being just my nanans dog, he walked out with my grandad and my mum and dad so i think he was for all the family and did'nt just take to one person.

We had one years ago and it was my dog (i was about 7) and it was soft as a brush. Personally most aggressive yorkies i see and i've seen loads belong to the blue rinse brigade who spoil them rotten with treats and lavish love on them so that they do get jealous of other people and snap.
I would have another no problem, but i've had more yorkies go for my danes mouth than any other breed and i think they only do it because they are afraid of her size and they think their golden oldie owner will protect sweet little diddums should anything happen.

Totally agree with mygirl!  I grew up with a yorkie called barney and he was the funniest dog I have known...Really loved him loads.  He was a stroppy git sometimes but he did get pulled around by four children on a regular basis - I think yorkies make great family pets, just bring it up as you would any breed really.  Teach the kids how to treat the dog and vice versa :D  You can all experience training and walkies and hopefully your yorkie will become a much loved member of the family!

i would look for a good  reptable breeder if i were you there temperment are better they are very adaptable dogs and want to please, some can be very snappy  that is true of course they get attached they will also love your children and want to sit on the lap want to play  i have 3 now 2 of mine would be suited with children furey my other yorkie would not anyway i wish you well with your search

We have a yorkshire Terrier that is now 8 years old as I have 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild rangeing from 18 month up to 12 years I can honestly say that Holley has been great with them all, she was brought up with the children and when she has had enough of playing football with them she will retire to her own box out of the way. We just taught the children that when holly goes to bed they are to leave her as that is her space.
