Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / protein in dog food

hi! Does anyone know or think that the higher percentage of protein in dry dog food causes hyperactivety in the dog?

depends on source of protein, that and colours, preservatives and other additives - and, just like children lack of discipline can also be a cause :)

There has been a study done on hyperactivity and protein levels in dog food; however it is fundamentally flawed as the base used was maize which is deficient in tryptophan an essential amino acid vital to health.  The studies were done on high and low levels of protein with and without added tryptophan.

Further to this one needs to understand the difference between CRUDE protein levels as listed on the label as opposed to protein that is bio-available to the dog.  One could feed 100% protein to dogs but if that protein was from leather they would not be able to utilise it.

In addition to the bio-availability the type of protein needs to be studied.  Cereals are incomplete proteins they do not contain the essential amino acids that are necessary to a dog's welfare (apart from soya).  It is the levels of amino acids and their take up and synergy that indicates whether the protein is suitable.

The lack of tryptophan and folates as well as lack of Omega 3s can all singularly or in combination be expressed as forms of hyperactivity.  (In humans as well as animals).

Also as Christine has rightly observed, unfortunately one cannot isolate the protein as there are a multiplicity of other factors that can trigger/exacerbate hyperactivity such as colourings, preservatives, humectants, stabilisers, emulsifiers etc.

Then there is the definition of "hyperactivity"! How do you quantify it?

Hi! HTH
That's a well defined definition for sure! Thanks. My dogs hyperactivity is classed as being high spirited in almost everthing she does~eating running playing chasing squeaking whining barking jumping etc. Just wondered whether she will ever calm down as she is almost 2 1/2 years old. Should a dogs brand of food change every few years? By the way she is well trained and does obey all commands and is adored for the way she is!
