Sorry if this is well known to some, but can anyone tell me why one of my dogs is eating the other dogs pooh? I am guessing it is one of two things, either a bad habit or some sort of deficiency?
Any ideas?

Sorry Admin I hope I don't get into trouble for advertising another website, I love this one the bestest :D (I didn't dare post a link ;-))
HTH.
P.S. How's your weim family doing, hope they are well :-)

Hi Claire, yes thanks, they are doing fine thanks for asking, Otto now towers over Molly and I hope to start him at agility in the next couple of weeks. Molly is so laid back that she looks at me as if to say, 'why do I have to jump over that again when I can go round it?' - she, who can jump like a stag. Makes me look a right fool ;o)
I shall have a look at 'that other place' then, thanks for the tip,
Nina.

Thank you Leigh, that was very informative :-)
However I think I must remind myself continuously that maybe reading some posts on this message board whilst I'm eating is not always a good idea :D

Hi weimowner,
The reason for it is because it goes back to the wolfs hunting drive, they will eat other animals poo and or roll in it in attempt to decrease the risk of detection when hunting/stalking upwind from the animal.
To stop it, no must mean no, training.

Dog poop is also not totally digested, so they are really getting food too. Also if they run with other dogs and they roll in each others poop they are trying to assimulate themselves as members of the pack and that they belong.(this info from a course taken in animal science)

Hi,
My dog also will eat the bitches poo, especially if
they were coming close to a season or in season.
He will not do it other times, so it must be to do with
scent, I assume. What do you all think??
Weimaraners will always try and eat, sheep poo, anything
disgusting, mine always try to eat gob fulls of rotten grass
and now when I say drop it they will, but it took ages
for them to get the message.
I know another lady that her Weimaraner ate lots of horse
dung which upset its stomach, but it still wanted to eat
more and more, so she tried changing its diet and that worked.

I've also heard good reports of pineapple chunks, 2 or 3 chopped up into their dinner.

Brewers Yeast Powder worked for my first weim, he ate his own poo and sprinkling this on his food (just a teaspoon) stopped him, also clearing up as soon as the dogs have gone helps to stop it.

I use pineapple juice on my horrors - they stopped eating it immediately - I just put a few tablespoonfuls in their food every day and they leave well alone now. Also there is a new tablet on the market called Deter which I hear is good.

Thanks for all the replies, I will try the pineapple chunks thing. My dogs already eat raw veg, carrots included so I am not sure if that one works?! Not for mine anyway.
Right, now for the disgusting part, it only happens when out on a walk, my dogs toilet off the lead so I couldn't reach it and inject it before my four legged friend if I tried!! It has to be warm as well I think, literally picks it up as she does it sometimes! He is young so that is a good clue to why he does it I guess, my bitch is spayed so it can't be connected with a season so perhaps it is an attention type of thing as well?
She is however on a different type of food from him so perhaps this is why it is 'attractive' to him.
I'll let you know how we get on thanks again.
