Topic Dog Boards / Health / Westie with flatulence problem
- By HAMISH75 [gb] Date 29.02.04 16:37 UTC
Hi All

My 1 yr old westie called Hamish keeps breaking wind, he really smells and i cannot understand what is causing the problem, he is fed on Eukanuba adult biscuit and he has some cooked chicken added to the meal, he has been on this same food since a puppy just that he has gone onto the adult biscuit now he is older. I split his daily allowance of biscuits between 2 meals as i find he is better on this but i cannot understand why he keeps smelling, i have had his glands checked and they are not blocked, but i cannot understand why. I know other dogs that have cooked chicken added to their meals and they do not have this problem. Would i be better giving him a pedigree pouch or a tin of Caesar mixed with his biscuits instead of the chicken, as the smell seems to be the same smell as when you open the box of cooked chicken when you take it out of the fridge, i would be very grateful for any advice or if anybody else's dog suffers from flatulence problems.

Thanks
Helen and Hamish

Hi Helen,

It could be he is just "adjusting" to the adult variety from the puppy version. If you've given him enough time on the adult to adjust fully (3 weeks), then you might want to switch to another brand.  James Well Beloved you can find in almost any pet supply store.  Burns is very good, but you most likely would need to order from the web site.   If you are in the UK the food I prefer is Naturediet, its a moist food.  I buy it at Pets at Home, but you can also order it directly from Naturediet.  if Hamish likes chicken he should adore the chicken and rice variety, it looks (and I assume tastes) like a homecooked meal of chicken, rice and veg.

How is Hamish's leg?

Hi Stacey

Thanks for replying, Hamish's leg is fine now so fingers crossed there will be no long term damage, he now comes off of his lead and runs the fields, he absolutely charges around like a maniac so he cannot have any pain in the leg, but i know there will probably be a weakness and as he gets older he may get a touch of arthritus but he seems to have recovered really well and the vet is pleased with him. He really is a lovely lad and a real cracker, we absolutely love him to bits!!!
As for the flatulence problem, he has now been on the adult food since early January, he is fine in himself just that a foul smell keeps coming up and he looks as if to say 'who did that', i have heard good reports about the tins of Caesar and i thought i may try adding a bit of this to the eukanuba but is this as good as cooked chicken?

Thanks again

Dear Hamish,

My name is Norman the Dachshund and I smell really bad too.  I don't get chicken very often - I only get dried food and the occasional hide chew.  Still, I let off wind at regular intervals that smells really bad.  I always look accusingly at the nearest person.

Norman ;)

Helen,

He does, he stinks, and I've tried everything.  His pumps literally make your eyes water and I've treid everything.  He's slighly better if I soak his food rather than giving it dried but it's still pretty bad.  I suppose some dogs pump and some don't.  Learn to love the smell or put 'Vick' up your nose.

Joe :)

Now why are some dogs like their owners Joe?  -  Oh yes!  I remember now :p

Hi Helen

I fed Luna on Eukanuba Puppy/Junior (and later) adult Large Breed. She also broke wond all the time. She smelled completely rotten. My theory is that its the Eukanuba, because I changed the brand, and now its only once in a while - instead of everyday around the clock.

Much much better! Only occasional use of gasmask :-)

My 1 year old westie was the same it was getting really bad. He was fed on cesar and biscuit and I gradually changed hi onto nature diet and I have no problem now unless he eats something rich or rawhide chews/ pigs ears.
