Hi

I would be very gratfull for your advise.

My Dog has had dioreah (sorry for the spelling) since Friday night. This moring he has been to the toilet twice and there is blood in his dioreah. I have rang our vets on the emergency number and they said as long as he is drinking and doesent seem to upset about it then he should be okay. He is acting like his normal self but should i be worried? is it normal for them to pass blood when they have dioreah, i would say there is quite alot of blood in it? last night he had some fish + rice but apart from that he has not eaten since friday evening?

Thanks
Claire

Hi
The usual course of action is to completely starve the dog for 24 hrs...water only. Then to offer boiled chicken and rice only and build from there.
Hope your lads ok

And yes it is normal for a dog that has diarrhoea for more that a day. As Archer said starve for a day then feed only chicken or fish and rice for a couple of days and then gradually introduce the dogs normal diet.

Hi Clare

The easy cheat way of spelling it is dire-rear :D

What colour is the blood - if small amounts of bright red this is generally not too serious in adults (puppies are a different matter) but if it is dark red it is coming from deeper inside and is more serious?

Dogs can cope with a few days of dire-rear but if your dog starts to vomit as well, especially just after eating or drinking, or looks ill and does not drink, then get him to a vet quickly but I expect your emergency vet asked you these questions and gave clarification when you spoke to him?

Yoghurt is really good for sorting out tummy troubles (and dire-rear :) ) You can mix it with their food or give it alone a few tablespoons at a time.
