I am astounded at the amount of dogs in 'rescues' needing 'stable' homes, not including the poor dogs requiring homes in private adverts. Sadly, the majority of people who want a dog is on a whim basis, and the reasons why these dogs need to be re-homed is because of the system, lack of laws and the people who bred them in the first place.
More recently I have seen 'unwanted' dogs privately advertised on the internet for 'hundreds' of pounds due to a zillion pathetic excuses. I am talking about dogs that are 1 years old plus that will need to be totally re-trained etc for around the same price of what a breeder would charge.
I do not like this expression, but similar to a car, a dog should have a log book from day 1 which would enable us to trace his/her every movement. So if you want to be a responsible breeder, microchip your puppies and log your information and also to whom you sold your puppy to! In effect, this dog can now be traced to it's current owner and breeder.
Unfortunately, many breeders seem to see pound signs and not the general welfare of the dog, otherwise there would be less 'anonomous' dogs requiring new homes.
Microchiping is as cheap as chips and surely you can afford it when you are selling your puppies for in excess of 650 pounds?
Afterthought??? If you are selling your 'unwanted' dog for an enormous amount of money, I hope that one day 'your name will be on the registry' which will restrict you from having animals, except for flies!!!!
If you really do need to rehouse your dog due to unforseen and legitimate circumstances, please think about the dogs welfare and not your wallet!
Hello guest,
I agree with most of what you're saying, but I think that a lot of responsible breeders DO chip pups before they go to their new owners. Certainly, most good breeders will always take back pups that are not wanted- they don't want their 'babies' to go into a rescue home either.
It is not against the law to sell a dog in the paper/on the internet, so even if it were microchipped by the breeder and the new owner details were logged, there is no law to say that the new owner cannot 'sell' the puppy on without telling the original breeder. Chipping would only help when/if the dog eventually ended up in a rescue home.It could have had many homes by then :(
I do agree though that if you have to re-home a dog, you should go through better channels than the paper. Breed specific rescue clubs do a great job and they know the special characteristics of their breeds, so they can 'match' up prospective owners.
If I ever had to re-home one of mine (god forbid!) I would never ask for money, I'd rather know that they had a really good home. If the new owner wanted to, I'd ask for a contribution for the breed rescue.
Ali :)
