Hi.  I am a little worried about my neighbours dog.  It is a greyhound that he has only had for about 2 weeks.  It is outside in a kennel (no door), with a run and it has no coat on it.  Do greyhounds that live outside have to wear coats especially in this awful cold weather.  When I look out of the window it doesnt look at all happy.  I dont speak to my neighbour (long story) but am concerned about the dog.  He has 2 springers too that also live out in these kennels.

Would think Springers OK Greyhound not. They are from a hot county and need warmth or a good coat.

Even Springers can feel the cold if they are't busy - the kennel problem really depends on the size/design of the kennel and the bedding and insulation available.  I used to keep a dog in a kennel at night - she was a large lab and the kennel was about 3' square - designed with the entrance door at right angles to the sleeping area door - so minimising draughts, and it was lined with several old quilts (easily washed and very warm) - being a Lab she had a thick coat and she fairly thrived as a young dog.  Before anyone jumps down my throat - she was very much a part of the family - only she slept in the kennel at night, rather than a basket in the kitchen....

It depends on the kennel design! and wether its heated, the bed is raised from the draft ect ect..racing greyhounds are nearly all kennel kept and often dont wear coats! nor do lurchers who are generally kept outside if they are working dogs.
another thing to consider is ,is the dog in on its own or is it in with the springers for company and warmth.
