I am of the opinion that many behaviour problems are created by not 'thinking dog' and I wondered if anyone can recommend a good book on the subject. When I have a litter I give the new owners a copy of 'The Perfect Puppy' which I believe is invaluable to puppy people but I would like to recommend a more 'advanced' book for them to purchase. There are many books on the subject but which would you consider the best.

There is actually a book entitled 'Think Dog' by John Fisher which is pretty good. But for me the bible of the dog's brain is 'The Dog's Mind' by Dr. Bruce Fogle.

All the above are good reading and I would like to add The Culture Clash - Jean Donaldson and Don't Shoot the Day - Karen Pryor. There are many others including the authors already mentioned and also those by Roger Mugford, Dr Ian Dunbar and Peter Neville.
Think it is important to read books by different people as some get fixated by a particular theory and loose sight of other opinions, in some cases they seem to loose sight of what they are talking about altogether in order to get their particular point across, so read lots with an open mind and then apply your own experience.

How there's common sense Jackie. Shame that common sense isn't very common any more!! :(

I agree Jackie. When someone tells me 'that is what it says in the book(s)' I tell them to go out and read another 20 books on the subject and pick out what they like or what applies to them from all of them. That said I too would recommend anything by Jean Donaldson and Don't Shoot the Dog is an excellent book - not specifically about dogs but a brilliant read about learning theories and some excellent tips on how to train the children, husband, work colleagues etc. :D
Two very good books that come to mind for anyone interested in dog behaviour are 'Jellybean' by CW Meisterfeld and 'Considering the Horse' by Mark Rashid.

Another good John Fisher title is 'Why does my Dog?.....' and also 'Dogwise'
I love all John Fisher's stuff, and have the hugest respect for him. He shows the most wonderful sense of humour too, which is what i love about his books :)
Not often mentioned is his last book, "Diary of a Dotty Dog Doctor" - this is the one where he changes his views a bit on pack theory etc. and gives the reasons why - written just before he died of a brain tumour :(
I am like you Jackie and Sally in that i try to read widely - but yes, you have to sift the knowledge a bit and apply some common sense too. It doesn't do to take on board everything you read! It's the same if i ask advice - i ask several people, but i always always make up my own mind in the end (which is probably very irritating for those who have just attempted to give me the benefit of their wisdom :D ).

Have to say, Lindsay, I liked John Fisher very much too, a delightful man, why do we seem to loose those of such value and humanity so young.
Thanks for mentioning the last book by John Fisher. I love his sense of humour too and his down to earth approach.
Thanks everyone, I shall have to trawl a few book shops. There are a few that I have not heard of so will endeavour to find them and read them myself.
Have a look for them on Amazon, and save yourself traipsing round bookshops :)
