Date 23.02.04 23:00 UTC

Get pregnant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, thats how I stopped. Had a dream my son would be still born and stoppede immediatly!!!!!!!!! Havnt smoked for 5 1/2 years now.
How about a Jar full of fag ends, Wehn you want a fag, sniff it. Makes you feel so sick, you wouldnt want one!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have heard that can work.
Good Luck.
Lea :)

Really,
really,
really want to. That is the most important thing. I smoked throughout pregnancy, but the thing that stopped me finally was my 2-year-old bursting into tears when I lit a ciggie, saying "Don't die, mummy". :(
So I bought a month's supply of tablets from the chemist (which cost about the same as a month's cigarettes, so I was damned if I was going to waste it). Then after a month I just kept going. That was 15 years ago on March 15th.

I found the nicotine lozenges/chewing gum really helped, but like Jeangenie said you really have to want to. I kept telling myself how great it was that I was no longer breathing in all that carbon monoxide even if I was getting a dose of nicotine. Have been smoke free for 1 year and nearly 2 months now and it was well worth it.
Good luck!

I agree with JG you must really want to and not do it for other people :)
I stopped as soon as I knew I was up the duff and haven't has one since but have had the urge to have one now and again but give myself a good talking to and that seems to work :)

I stopped smoking about 4 years ago, using the inhaler. It works really well (although you feel a bit of a pratt!). Two days after I quit the inhaler, my lung collapsed, it wasn't a nice experience!! Fraid I was stupid enough to start again, and now I'm terrified of stopping in case the same thing happens again. Any doctors on this forum that can give me advice?
Sarah.

I'm not surprised Emma, after everything you've had to deal with lately. I did exactly the same thing when my ex left me & 2 kids and 2 dogs to move in with a woman he'd known for a week! I hadn't smoked for 8 years, and started again!!! Still smoking 18 months later, I will stop, but I need to be in the right frame of mind, just like you have to be to go on a diet. Unfortunately, no magic cures, except getting pregnant, like someone mentioned earlier (that's how I quit last time), mind you, there's no chance of that happening, being single!! Then again - how long is it til Christmas :D

Go to W.H.Smiths, buy a copy of Allen Carr's book, the only way to stop smoking.............
You WILL stop after you've read it...

As others have said you really really must want to stop, and tell everyone you know you've quit smoking so they don't offer you one when you might be tempted.
I started running, well walking then running then a bit more walking but i'm running every day now, and what really stopped me starting smoking again was the disgusting stuff that I coughed up whilst running.
Good luck with quitting you really will feel so much better.
Steve
p.s don't be suprised if you have really bad headaches in the first couple of weeks ( oops thats not going to encourage you is it LOL )

When I gave up about 6 years ago I put £2 in a pot on the coffee table, every day... which is what I would have spent on ciggies. It's true, you have to REALLY REALLY want to give up and once you've done a few days it gets easier as you have something to build on. It's amazing how the money built up also, when ever I had a craving I'd look at the pot of money, I think I was saving for furniture at the time and it wasn't long before I had it! Good luck.
Hi Geof
Just been lent a copy of the book after my two mates quit after reading it, have just started it, fingers crossed it works.

When I realised that my whole life was being controlled by those little white sticks eg did I have enough to last me to the next day/weekend etc it was easy. I wanted to be in control of my life; not be controlled by a habit. I gave up cold turkey 15 years ago and have never touched one since from being a 30 - 40 a day person.

I gave up last August and it was the best thing I have ever done.. Only trouble now I sound like my mum when we go out and I get a wiff :D I joined a stop smoking group at my local doctors,it really helped. Although it was a lot easier than I thought.
I tried Zyban (sp) but I was only on it for 2 days when my blood pressure went through the roof and I also became very depressed so after that I went cold turkey.
Still fancy one now and then but I wont, kids would kill me!!
Good Luck, once youve broken the habit, it becomes easier

There's 2 books to choose from, The easy way & The only way...
The best one is The only way, my copy has stopped myself & 3 other people from smoking.
Geoff :)

I quit in April last year (I had a 40 - 60 a day habit

) I started trying to quit in January last year by hypnosis (didnt work :( ) then I tried the patches - and carried on smoking whilst wearing them  then one morning I woke up and thought im never going to smoke again, and I went cold turkey - I havent smoked a cigarette since. Im quite typical of an ex-smoker in that I detest the smell of stale smoke but untypical in that I dont mind the smell of fresh smoke !! The thing that helped me most was a friend, I hadnt known him long (he was a friend friend not a lover :P ) but he was a non smoker (my only non smoking friend) and everytime i saw him he would moan about me smelling of smoke, even if I thought I had covered it up with perfume  he then threatened to break all my fingers if he caught me smoking -- that kind of worked :D :D :D
Good luck

its ridiculous when you think about it, we only smoke 'cos we're addicted to nicotine, yet the doctors give us chewing gum & patches, etc, etc.... its a bl**dy scam by the government to keep us addicted.
Everyone who smokes WANTS to stop, people say that to stop you need to really want to give up, all smokers (except teenagers) want to stop. The reason they don't is fear of failiure....

very true Geoff i do believe its a fear of failure, but also my problem is although i do want to give it up because its bad for my health etc, i enjoy smoking, always have done :(
Come on Dawn! You can do it! There is no failure with stopping, as every one you dont have is a victory. I need to stay off the fags to afford my dream dog, and cant think of anything Id rather spend £500 on, or put another way thats 8 weeks fag money in exchange for a lifetimes pleasure. Set a date, ditch the lighters, fags and ashtrays, choose a Nicotine replacement gum/patch/spray whatever and stick with it at least 3 months. Tell everyone you are a non smoker now and if anyone offers you a fag, rip it up in front of them and it wont happen again. Have a treat evry day to reward yourself for your will power and keep a list of reasons to stop with you at all times. Put the fag money in a tin and count it every so often to remind yourself how well youre doing. Go for it!
You have read the book Geoff ;) . I have too, but unfortunately it didn't work for me, despite me totally believing everything it says. Next step is the 4-hour course which has a money-back guarantee if it doesn't work....

Dawn I am three yrs off ciggies now.
I took zyban for two weeks,i was not able to carry on with them for month as felt awful but when I gave up taking zyban the cigs still tasted awful so they worked for me.
I also took vitachrome to stop longing for sweet things.
Mari
The only way you will give up smoking is if you really really want to, i gave up smoking 18yrs ago the best thing i ever did, i had tried several times to give it up and failed but that last time i really ment it, if your telling yourself cigs dont do you any harm then you wont stop, they do kill so smokers stop kidding yourselves and do the right thing so that us non smokers dont get cancer from your smoke, good luck.

I stopped smoking in January. I went to the NHS smoking clinic & got the patches. I was also given the gum but haven't used them yet. Apart from all the obvious health benefits, the benefit I enjoy most of all is the feeling of being clean. I just love it! Chez.
