Hi Guest, you will never have seen one 'for sale', because Breeders are very careful about who they sell their dogs to! I own an Italian Greyhound and was on a waiting list for a long time. You will need to visit dog shows, where you can meet breeders and make sure you see dogs in their homes, as well as in the show ring. Then, they may put you on a waiting list.
They are not for the faint hearted, they can be noisy, very very energetic around the house (and I mean flying off the backs of settees!) They are prone to leg breaks and you will need to find a good line of dogs with a great breeder, otherwise it can literally cost thousands of pounds if leg breaks do occurr. They very much dislike the cold weather, they shouldnt really be allowed up and down flights of stairs as they can very easily think they can 'FLY' and jump down whole flights of stairs resulting in serious accidents. A good breeder is unlikely to sell a puppy to a house where there are young children, again due to the possibility of leg breaks. A good breeder should also do a home check and expect to be asked for a reference from your vets. (if these things arent asked for, then worry, ALOT!) It is SO worth finding a great breeder as they will help you when you really need it and believe me, you will need lots and lots of advice!
IG's can be difficult to house train and do not tend to be 'clean' dogs, expect accidents! They are unlike any other breed I have come accross and it is well worth making sure they are what you want!
BUT, if you have done ALL the research, spoken to numerous breeders, been to numerous houses with IGs, have tonnes of time and love for these very needy dogs which thrive on human companionship and STILL want one, then I can reccommend them as lovely dogs and I wouldnt be without my Cracker!
If you would like any more info from a first time IG owner, I would be happy to help, Lisa.hale@dial.pipex.com
PS if you need a first step: Go to Stafford show in March and meet breeders!

Aaaah Lisa!
Wecome to the mad mad world of Italian Greyhound ownership!!
See,everything we told you about them was true!
The test is, though, would you have another? The breeder of my first IG always says they're like peanuts- you don't really like them, but you can't just have one!
Hope to see you at UK Toy.

P.S. to guest- Another point to add to Lisa's very informative reply- when visiting breeders, be very wary if the dogs spend most of their time in cages, since this would indicate to me that they have a leg- breaking problem. There are strong-boned lines around- mine do agility and run with my Whippets.
Good luck in your search.
