Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Virgin Yorkies..a lot of questions!
- By chair260 [gb] Date 24.02.04 20:16 UTC
I have a yorkie bitch who is 1 year and 9 months old.
...Is this old enough to mate her?
I have found a stud dog who is a year old.
...is this an okay age fr a stud?
He has never mated before and neither has she.. I read ona  post here that breeding two unexperienced dogs could leave you with2 injured dogs,
...how could it?
I really want to breed her but I am unsure of the ins and outs of it...
Somebody please fill me in!!!
Thankyou,
Me + Milly xxx

Unless you are experienced it is not a good idea to breed to virgin dogs + you = 3 virgins as far as dog breeding is concerned. See you say you really want to breed her, may I ask why, I'm not trying to put you off but the reason may well make a difference to the way you should go.

Well, I want her to have puppies for experience, (hers and mine) and because I just really want her to have puppies. It just sort of feels like once she's had puppies she would be sort of fulfilled in a way.
I know that sounds like a load of codswollap but it just feels like she should. Anyway, if I bred her to an experienced dog would it make a difference?

Yes an experienced stud will come with an experienced owner who will deal with the whole matter and there will be less likelihood of the dog or bitch being injured. Best place to start is with the bitches breeder and find out which lines you should be looking at to complement your bitch. And if your bitch is of good enough quality to be bred from. You should leave it till she is at least a good few months older so you have time to do your research.

As to you reasons, well have to say I would be happier if you had a cracking bitch and thought you could breed really good quality pups to enhance the breed. As it is you are putting your bitch at risk of her life on what is a whim and a fancy, but that is your business and you were not asking for our approval.

Try working through this.

It'll give you an idea of what you might expect if you manage to get her mated.
