Hi I just wondered what your thoughts were about an older puppy settling in to a new home.
We have large breeds, and have always had a puppy from 8 weeks.Have been on a waiting list for a puppy from a breeder , who has been running on 2 babies. We have the chance of one of these, hopefully to show, but she will be about 18 weeks if we have her.
Do you think she will settle ok?
Would appreciate your thoughts

Hi,

Dogs are very adaptable and i wouldnt worry about your pup being 18 weeks, i got my briard when he was 17 weeks old and he is now a very well behaved and secure 16 month old :-)
good luck

We picked up our Bassett at that age and she was just fine :) ....even house trained :D .....however, your pup will have to adjust to her new home... ie, she'll need to re-educated as to where her new 'toilet' door is (this took a few days)...and... may well go off her food during this settling in period (our Rosie was fine for about the first 4 days after, after which, she went off her food, of and on, for about 6 days :(  ....loads of love and cuddles will soon put that right ;)

Don't worry....as long as you've got time, love and tasty chicken bits she'll be fine ;)

Good Luck
Jo

When my pup was younger i went to puppy classes and there was a mastiff breeder there with one of her puppies. She kept the pups until about 6 months of age and took them to basic training classes and that way she was able to had over the pup with a KC good citizen puppy foundation certificate, secure in the knowledge that she had socialised him well and given him a good grounding in life and the family were thrilled. I think she also wanted to make sure that the pup was not show quality though as she was toying with the idea of keeping him. But i thought it was a really good idea.
