I am an apartment dweller with 2 children that are 4 and 6, but well behaved with animals.  We are looking for a smaller breed that doesn't shed alot and won't go crazy being home alone during the day.  We are considering a Boston Terrier, but I have read mixed reviews about their ability to be alone. Suggestions? Breed recommendations?

When you say alone during the day though , how long will that be ?
Can anyone pop in during the day ?
Can you give all your attention to the dog after being out , given that you will also need to pay attention to your children ?
What floor is your apartment on ? Is  there easy access to a secure garden etc ?
If the answer is a definate YES then you may be able to consider a dog - I dont personally know what the breed of your choice is like bu someone else may be able to help :)

I would say yo are more suited to owning a cat.  Cats are by nature more solitary animals than dogs which are pack animals and require company most of the day, and gew dogs would be happyt being lef5t alone for more than a couple of hours at a time 9n a regular basis.

Also it is much easier to Litter Train a cat than trying to housetrain a -up that will need to be taken out to toilet about every half hur while it is awake throughout the day, and even then few pups can hold on any length of time before about 5 months of age.

Unless you apartment is very small the small breed may not be you best choice. As long as you are able to exercise it you could look into a retired greyhound. They are lazy and quiet round the home and in most cases are quite happy with longish periods alone. A good greyhound rescue should be able to give you details on the pros and cons generally and on individual dogs.

Hi, Have you looked at the Coton de Tulear (Very expensive but lovely) or maybe the Havanese.They both are very much people dogs,and need lots of company. But both seem to be suitable to apartment living, children, and cats.
