Hiya
I know I've mentioned this before, my garden is on the edge of a huge dog walking field, we have a hedge that runs down the side of the garden then a ditch, & then another large hedge then its the field. Dylan goes on the field every day, but its a 15 minute walk to get him there due to us being up a cul de sac, hes never had access to the field from the garden, in fact I'm not sure he realises its just over the fence. Anyhow, this morning I was out cutting the grass, (I know its a bit early but it needed doing) hubby took Dylan to the field. He was right over the other side, (about 200 metres) no way could I see him, & Dylan suddenly ran away from him, straight through the 1st hedge & then got stuck trying to get through the 2nd hedge to say hello to me. My question is, was this just coincidence or would a dog (mad Cocker) be able to smell someone they knew from so far away? He never usually leaves our sides when hes out walking.

He probably can smell you :)
We live next to the field - only one hedge between. Even if we are at the bottom of the first field, about 50yds from the road, our older dog can tell if my husband's car arrives home (he can't see the front of our house from the field) and will start to run home. Fortunately, he does stop and wait at the gate :) Our hedge is holly and hawthorn and he discovered at a young age that it hurts if he tries to get through it :D
