- By spotty dog [gb] Date 21.02.04 09:31 UTC
I've recently purchased a digital camera and now need a decent printer to print out pictures. I have a printer at the moment but it's just not up to printing out quality pictures. Does anyone have a printer they use for photos that they could reccomend. It has to be really good quality printing as I will be using it to display photos.

I have an Epson stylus Photo 915 and am very happy with it,the ink cartridges seem to last for ages too, which is quite important! The print quality can be set at different levels but I use the best quality mostly, plus there are filter options, different photo formats etc. there are more expensive ones on the market but I am perfectly happy with this one :)

Hewlitt Packard ..excellent printers and picture perfect :) I have a 1315 but I think there are newer ones now :)

I have a Dell printer which is fine but i had "cheaper" paper which I felt let the pics down as they were fine on normal paper but i want a better quality gloss paper

Hi i'm glad someone asked this as we've been looking for one as well, but what we were wondering is have any of you worked out roughly how much it costs you per picture?
The reason I ask is that up until now we've always downloaded our pics onto freeserve and ordered them from there, which works out as 25 pence each.
We keep most of our pics on C.Ds and only order a few pics now and again so were wondering if its worth it?

if u only get a few prints it would probably be much cheaper to just continue what ure doing, it's such a hassle with printers, paper and ink cartridges if u only want a few prints

Last paper I bought was hp premium glossy photo paper 10 x 15cm and I paid around £12 for 60 sheets.  I don't find it any hassle at all to run off a print on my printer.  I can print off negatives and use the digi cam memory card directly into the printer without having to run off the pc.  It's fab :)
One of the plus sides of doing your own as well is if you have a good photo package on your pc you can edit and enhance your pics at your leisure as well and have some fun.  I have Adobe Photoshop 7 :)

I usually just copy what I want onto disc and take them to boots or somewhere to have developed as I think you get better photos and it probably works out cheeper than paying for the ink and photo paper if your doing a lot of photos (I usually end up doing 90 or 100 at a time).

Use an Epson stylus Photo 950 and paper from Photoglossy of the IOW. here. Have tried other makes of printer but they IMO are not a patch on the Epsom. But the results are reliant in the quality of the paper used.

Thanks to everyone who helped me on this one, I went out today and on the advice from a man in cartridge world went to pc world and they had an offer on a hewlett packard photosmart 7762 reduced from 199 to only £99, bargain eh!
I'm amazed by the quality of the printing, better than any photos I've ever had developed, is a bit slow to print by it's worth it. If anyone is looking for one definately go and buy one of these, I think they're only on offer till Monday so had better be quick.

I would just like to say...check the price of the refil cartridges BEFORE you buy the printer...we started of with a lexmark. The refils were £26 each(need 2).We now have a canon...refils £7...and no difference in the amount of prints they do

I get my cartridges refilled at cartridge world which I've had no problems with so roughly they cost half the price of a new cartridge.

ok, as a professional photographer i can tell you now that inkjet printers will never give you what you want!!! If you want photos then go to a pro lab & get them printed (not Boots or some amatur printers, they do not have their machines set correctly for proper digital printing) I use an epson 950 for rough drafts & proofing, but would never ever dream of selling a client a so called "photo" from an inkjet printer & any photographer who does, is very very amateurish :( Regards paper, well if you must use an ink jet printer then do NOT bother with epson papers. use Ilford gallerie (thanks for that gibbsy!) :)

I'm not a professional photographer, I bought my printer mainly for home and building up a portfolio of my work, with the mixture of both decent quality camera, printer and cheap £4.99 kodak paper my pictures have came out amazing. I showed them to a friend who is a professional videographer (he's seen a lot of professional work) and he agreed I could not have got any better quality than this. Thanks to all the helpful comments to my post!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi spottydog you probably wouldn't get much better from general photo developers such as boots or any of the other high street chains and for general pics thats fine, what sam is talking about ( I think ) is professional developing the type used in art photography which is in another league all together.

err spotty dog, I wasnt having a go at you, calm down! I was just pointing out that cheap paper+ cheap printer= cheap results. You say you are putting together a portfolio, but I presume thats not as a photographer, otherwise you would KNOW that inkjet prints are not photographic prints!
- By spotty dog [gb] Date 25.02.04 19:45 UTC
No certainly not a photographer, this is my frist digi camera. Reading msgs on here is similar to reading text msgs, they don't come accross too well sometimes, Yes I thought you were having a go at me. SOS.
- By Drai21 [ca] Date 25.02.04 19:48 UTC
I heard from a photography expert that the Canon s-9000 is the way to go.  Granted it does cost more than the average printer, but that is what the professionals around here suggest.
