Hi All :)

I am really tempted to get a Belgian Hare to add to my collection of small and furries... I have been offered a young doe and she is just gorgeous. Anyone have any experience of keeping these as house pets? I already have a couple of house rabbits who live in Great Dane sized dog crates when not out - would this life be suitable ofr a Belgian hare?

My brother had a Belgian Hare when I was just a baby.  We have photos somewhere of it sat infront of the fireplace at Christmas with me in my nappy opening presents!  He was called Rex for some strange reason.  I seem to recall he didn't live in the house all the time but in the "outhouse" (that we all used to have in the olden days) but would wait by the back step to come in.  I used to breed dalmatian rex rabbits some years ago and my neice (brothers daughter) still has one of mine that lives in the house.  She has a partner now and has just moved into her own flat, rabbit went too.  She brings him to her Nans at weekends to visit and have a run on the grass!  He is 8 now but lives quite happily in the house and is very clean.  He does cause trouble with wires on the odd occasion if you aren't careful and he likes to take washing from the clothes horse if he can.

We don't have any rabbits anymore but I do miss them.

TRhink of the difference between a greyhound and a Labrador and should give you an idea of what the Belgian hare loosk like.

they are not of course a hare, as rabbits and hares have totally differnt reproductive time scales.  Rabbits like puppies and kittens are blind and helpless at birth, and are bald to boot, whereas Hares like Guinea pigs are born fully furred with eyes open after a longer gestation period.

They are a rich russety red colour laved with black, ands have long legs and slim bodies with an arched back like that of a whippet.

They need tall cages.

Hi - I suspected as much with the crate - my current rabbits have 42inch crates that are about 3 foot high. I think I will probably be getting a buck and a doe, and keep them separate. I know they must have a first litter by 9 months, but I am not sure I would breed anyway - I was just really taken aback by how sleek and gorgeous they are! :)

You lucky thing!  I saw one once at a local agricultural show, and fell in love with them, unfortunately I've never seen any advertised.
