This is a serious post :o - are they dangerous/poisonous if my pup manages to catch one as we have a load in the garden and I have had to take one (still alive) off of him earlier today. Only looked away for a minute!!! Ta Gina

If they squeak Gina its a toad (and yes they are poisonous) if it croaks its a frog. Please don't destroy the spawn if they are frogs as they are getting quite rare.

Our old family dog picked up a toad once and spent the rest of the day at the vets as her mouth started to froth. It gave her a real "mad dog" look and she was really uncomfortable for a while.
I was reading an article in Dogs Today about the horrible things dogs can pick up from slugs (some sort of worms, I think it was) and that if they ate frogs who feed on these slugs they could still get them. Can't remember if it was just in the rest of Europe, or over here too.

Oh I wouldnt do that I gave it all to the neighbour as he has a big pond....but they will still come back to mine when they hatch or whatever it is they do!! Talk about a townie LOL - Gina

Oh, this is interesting, because I'm not sure if what I have is frogs or toads. The only time I've heard a noise is when they squeak, but that was probably because I stepped on it! Ooops!
- By Sharonw [gb] Date 19.03.02 22:15 UTC
Gina, we used to have lots of toads in our garden when I had the yorkies. Didn't kiss any though - maybe I should have! The dogs used to bark at them and sometimes tried to pick them up. None of them (the dogs) came to any harm, although somebody told me that toads can emit some kind of poison. Check it out if you are worried.

I wonder what I would get if put toads into Google search.....I'll let you know :o Gina
- By dizzy [gb] Date 19.03.02 22:35 UTC
seriously :( the slime on toads can cause a reaction in dogs-it has been known to kill them-honest,
- By mari [ie] Date 19.03.02 22:36 UTC
well it wont be a prince Gina they only come from frogs:). witches and warts are from toads that why I love toads im a witch ;) minus the warts
- By gina [gb] Date 19.03.02 22:42 UTC
Mari oohhh would need to see a piccie of you to make sure about the warts - told they can be quite attractive on witches LOL

Dizzy I thought as much so will make sure we keep an eye on him. We got rid of most of the gunky spawn on the pond but I bet we still get a load. My neighbour has a big pond and we have a small one but guess where all the frogs are mostly!!

Night night Gina - Barney wants to go to bed. Doing his usual dance by the stairs (he cant get up them his legs are too short) so he has to "tell" us and then we both have to go to bed with him!!
- By mari [ie] Date 19.03.02 22:56 UTC
so you found your prince Gina night night ;) ;)
- By patricia [gb] Date 20.03.02 08:48 UTC
Hi Gina, cats catch and kill the poor old frogs they seem o.k.
I have had a "frog and toad" in my garden for years and my dogs have never been ill
- By Ashanie [eu] Date 20.03.02 10:18 UTC
Toads emit a nasty tasting substance to make the predator drop it, this makes the dog/cat froth at the mouth - it will not do any lasting damage. Frogs and Toads will also cover their eyes with their little flippers and scream (very disturbing noise).

Can anyone tell me is it the frog or toad that give you hallucinations if you lick
there back. NO I am not thinking of doing that:0 .but was just wondering if the cats and dogs would get a high ;)
- By Julieann [gb] Date 20.03.02 13:02 UTC
I came home last night to find a small frog in my porch! Molly was all over the place trying to sniff it, though my hubby came to the rescue and picked him up and put him back in the garden in the rain!

Last Saturday I arrived home to find my husband (wimp) standing on the seatee shouting at the dogs, they had brought in a very large frog, the more he shoulted the more they chased the poor frog around the lounge, even the cats were joining in, it was like a comedy show, I managed to catch the frog and put it outside but until the coffee table, vase of flowers had been toppled over. I might not have has a house left if I had arrived any later. I don't mind frogs it snails which have been crunched but still alive being brought in the house.
- By kia mummy [gb] Date 20.03.02 13:06 UTC
Frogs tend to have smooth skin and toads are lumpy as far as I know thats the only quick way to tell the difference,I'm sure there are more scientific ways but when its in the dogs mouth you wont be able to see it anyway.Yes toads do secrete a venom when threatened but I don,t think any in the uk cause hallucinations
- By issysmum [gb] Date 20.03.02 13:38 UTC
Eeeeww, (makes vomiting noises) but that would mean actually touching it. As for licking it, oh my God. The imagery is just too strong on that one!! :D

One of my little Griffs occasionally brings frogs into the house, I found one once totally unhurt on my chair. I mentioned it jokingly to the vet that afternoon (she was there for something totally unconnected) and was told that if it was a frog she would be fine, but if a toad and she started frothing at the mouth I would need to contact them. I think she brings them in to play with them and never harms them at all.

its a big toad in Australia I think and they get huge so it'd have to be a brave dog or cat to go lick that!:D If you want to get your dog or cat high----- just put it on a shelf. ha ha
- By dizzy [gb] Date 20.03.02 21:51 UTC
the sharpei bitch ive just got back--casey had a bad do last year with a toad, one had been seen in the garden and later that day casey became shaky and i think she was vommiting, anyhow she collapsed, ,she was rushed to the vets .her throat was nearly closed up making her gasp to breathe, she had to be tubed etc, it was touch and go for a while-the vet asked had there been any toads at all seen- so there you go --toads are not good for dogs!
- By gina [gb] Date 21.03.02 12:57 UTC
I shall keep a very close eye on him then cos I cant tell the difference and for a little podgy dog with short legs he sure can run when he thinks he may be able to eat whatever he catches. I leave the security lights on now when it gets dark so I can see what he gets up to properly. Regards Gina

PS I have now got my internet working at work and as we have 1 1/2 hours for lunch I am having a great time !!!
