Now this might appear a stupid question so please don't shoot me :)
I currently have a 6 year old Border Collie who is due into season any day (although just because I want her to she is showing no signs). She will be spayed after a suitable time probably in May.
However, I am hoping to go and look at a 4 month old male puppy this week-end. What I want to know is how much would her being in season drive him nuts? Coz I know what it can do to male dogs, but at what age does all that kick in.
Yes I do appreciate about keeping them a part :D But I am more concerned about his 'mental health' and urges he may not understand :D
PS: He is not a BC :D
Hi Reefer
At five months some (not all) can, and do, mate in-season bitches they live with.
It probably depends on the individual pup - how mature he is physically, I don't think he will need to "understand" to obey the urge - just do it :D

:D Thanks for the reply
I appreciate that these things can ermm come naturally :D And am fully prepared for monitoring their behaviour very closely, and of course as his new to the house they'd never be left alone together anyway. And any signs of flowers, candlelit dinners, swooning would be nipped sharply in the bud :D
Thanks to CD's, should they find a way, I know exactly what I would do.....
I'm more worried about the pining, going off food thing......would that be too much for a 4 month to cope with, on top of coming to a new home :)

I work in a boarding kennels and occasionally we get dogs in on heat. Not only do the males pine , they bark , constantly mark , try to get through the wall to the dog on heat etc. Your new puppy could be driven completely bonkers coming into a new home with a dog on heat! Needless to say we at the kennels dont encourage dogs on heat to stay with us for the sanity of the males in our care - and our sanity as a result!!! Could you not delay getting your puppy till after your dog has finished her season?

Oh gawd would it really be that bad? I wouldn't dream of bringing him here if she was already in season, but I know it should be due in the next couple of weeks.
Trouble is you can be waiting for ages looking for the right dog to join your family, and then you find one right at the worst time :D Think it's called s*d's law which seems to be the rule by which my life is run ;)

It may not be that bad at all , im just giving you some sort of idea if what i have seen in some male dogs. if it was me i would ask if the person you are getting him from will hold on to him till after your dogs seaon has finished.

Well I tried phoning the vet and all their appointments had gone for yesterday :D
But I have spoken to his breeder and he is currently living with a bitch who is in season and has shown no interest or change at all :D
