I put my dogs bowls on the floor. Does anyone use the stands to put the dinner bowls in? Do the dogs prefer a stand? What are your views
Jean

They are good for large dogs & giant breeds. Always used stands for my Rotti & Bullmastiffs.

My Afghan has a bowl stand. The rest, mostly collies, have theirs on the floor.

Hello Jean :D
Bowl stands are traditionally used for tall and/or deep chested breeds, as it is believed they reduce the chances of such dogs suffering from bloat.
I'm sure your girl wouldn't mind eating from a bowl on a stand, if you prefer, but there's no particular need for it with Collies.

Recent research has reversed the original thinking about raising food stands. I can see the reasoning behind the giant breeds but not for others. I have a breed prone to bloat and I do not elevate their food dishes.

I use stands for my dogs and love them. I much prefer to feed this way :)

thanks for the feedback I will leave well alone & keep the bowls on the floor

Must admit, I thought I had heard that raised bowls are not so good regarding bloat now. My briard Saffy is fed from a bowl on the floor.

As with all health things - human or canine - it's a good idea one week, bad the next  (eat salmon/don't eat salmon lol - don't think I've ever eaten it so much as since they told us it's toxic)!
Was just explaining why some people tend to use them.

I don't use a stand as Norman then can't reach his food and gets too skinny :D
i only have a lab, but use a stand for her. It stops her from bolting her food.....and the floor's a lot cleaner!!!
could have put this on the one before, but a bit slow today! My sister has a boxer who has a 'deformed' oesophagus-it has an almost pocket like part. If he feeds from the floor, he has to eat from a raised stand otherwise food gets stuck and he brings it all back up again. Don't know if its partly because hes one of the deep chested bloat prone dogs or what, but.....

Dogs with medical conditions such as megaoesophagus must eat from elevated stands, deep chested or not.
Hi
I also has a lab, and Luna was just like sucking in, and eating everything in one mouthful. Now its on a stand, and she has to chew her food. Its not that high up, just a bit. Its really nice. And a lot less messy!

Joe, you really do make me laugh!:)
