just wondered how breeders went about naming the pups in their litters.i name all the dogs in each litter with a name beginning with the same letter (after my affix) so the first litter all began with A's and my next B's (i have only bred 2 litters since getting my affix) and the next ones will all start with a C, this is just my way of keeping it straight in my head what they were if i see their names in later pedigrees.also know some breeders who give each litter a theme like footballers,actors,films,philosophers etc.and then others who just name them whatever with no real connections.just wondered what others do and their reasons (if any) for doing it this way.

I think your idea is great ~ you can then think "aha , the 'c' litter ".

As my breed is a Spanish Water Dog, I have to think of Spanish names, not easy I can tell you especially when you're not Spanish :d

The breed I am hopefully getting is French, so the breeder likes the dogs to have french names, any ideas for M or N would be gratefully received!

Our litter was french wines, girls where white and boys were red.  (it was going to be star treck theamed!!!)

Grandparents boxers used to be colours so each litter had its own colour.

It varies, but all have a theme.  Sometines a letter (Ambrose, Arrabella etc) sometimes a theme, had gossip a couple of years ago as theme, so had Rumour Has It, On the Grapevine, etc.  Last years litter were all DB,  so have Darcey Bussell, Dusty Bin, Damn Buster. Pugs so far have been nursery rymes and Fairies  (|Fariy Cakes, Airy Fairy).  May be suffering from mental exhaustion as Jennifer and Jerry are still unchristened at 11 weeks!

Don't forget that you have to think of twice the number of names as you have puppies. The KC registration form requires that a second choice name is given, unless you want to give the KC carte blanche to inflict their choice on you. Keeping the theme must be a nightmare with a large litter. I only got two, and I chose a ballet theme, so I have Trunorth Pirouette and Trunorth Danseuse.

I do the same, but as I am of Polish extraction I use Polish words, means I generally have no trouble with names being rejected byt the Kennel Club.

A Norwegian Norse breed with Slavonic names, total heresy!!!  Gives poor people in my breed a headache speeling and pronouncing, but recently I have tried to choose words that are easy to say an pronounce, with some resemblance to English ones even for those that are glikely to be shown.

My opwn girls are Barbelka Amorek, B. Calusek (actually pron. Tsa-woo-sek, but most people pron it phonetically, makes me laugh as sounds like a small Calous), Ch B. Eliksyr, and baby B. Iskra (pron. Ees-kra).  A dog I bred that is shown has the name B. Dziarski, which people have terrible trouble with, but is pronounced Jar-ski, as in polish DZ is the J sound, and C's are pronounced Ts.

My theme is Shakespeare.

I started with a bitch who's KC name came from Shakespeare (Olivia) but I used the initial of the sire's KC name (M) to give the litter their KC names eg. Miranda, Montague, Mopsa, Moonshine etc.

This has been the theme since.   My second litter were sired by a dog "Hi Flyer", so the bitches were given 'H' Shakespearean names (Hippolyta, Hecate etc) the dogs with 'F' names (Ferdinand, Fabian etc.)

Third litter I used the same dog, so I took my Christian name initial (C) - Curtis, Caithness, Charmian, etc.

Always done the traditional hound way, ie all same letter, taken from Sires 1st letter of name unless its my own stud, then use dams 1st initial!"

I use a theme my first litter were black... and blue... I had a litter connected to magic, one begining with A, one with C  and my last were all Dream... as I had waited six years for that litter and it was a dream come true. As you say it is a way of tracking puppies through pedigrees.
